Profile:
Mr. Louis Isack Kumar is an educator who innovates ICT-based lessons to suit his students’ learning needs. He has incorporated open-source tools in his SMART classroom and has aroused interest in the Tamil language among his students through ICT-based self-directed and collaborative teaching strategies.
Mr. Louis Isack Kumar has been teaching for the past 10 years in India and the Singaporean educational system. Mr. Isack served as a teaching faculty at Tamil Nadu Pre-Primary Educational Trust after completing his Master's in Education, and taught educational psychology and teaching pedagogy. Later, he was appointed as a Post Graduate Teacher at Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Chennai from 2007 to 2009. Then he was appointed as an Education officer by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Singapore and served as a teacher and coordinator at Bartley Secondary School. Apart from teaching, he is also involved in various projects led by the Professional Development Wing, UPTLC, and the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, TL Unit, Ministry of Education, Singapore.
He is also a General Council member representing Singapore in World INFITT (International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil) since 2011. He also served as a member of the organising committee at the International Tamil Internet Conference 2015 held at UniSIM, Singapore.
He was invited as a trainer and facilitator to conduct workshops and numerous sharing sessions at cluster, inter-cluster, zonal, and national levels in Singapore. Mr. Isack has made a name for himself both locally and overseas. Apart from being invited as a facilitator, he has also attended and presented papers in numerous countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Italy, Japan, and the United States of America.
Interest:
His teaching and research interests have been primarily concerned with infusing information technology in Tamil language learning, computational Tamil language, spoken interaction, classroom innovative pedagogy, teaching Tamil as a second language, and infusing ICT in Tamil pedagogy for the Tamil diaspora.
Professional Contributions:
He designed and facilitated a teacher-ideated workshop for secondary and junior college Tamil language teachers on “Innovate with open-source tools” at Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre, Ministry of Education. He also conducted and facilitated a national teacher-led workshop for Education Officers at the Academy of Singapore Teachers on “Using Social Media and Multimedia resources for Teaching and Learning Tamil Language”. Beyond this, he also conducted a “Mobile Apps development workshop” for HTL students at the national level at UPTLC, Singapore and taught students the technicalities of developing mobile apps in Tamil to bring the language to future generations.
He is involved in various projects led by the professional development wing, UPTLC, and the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, TL Unit. Mr. Isack was involved and contributed to a Research-Based Resource Development Project on Spoken Interaction. He actively contributed and developed resources for students’ spoken interaction skills in Tamil for secondary Tamil language teachers, led by the Professional Development Wing. He is also a member of the Task Force for Student Learning Space Content Creation – Tamil Language and contributed and developed resources for SLS, led by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, TL Unit, Ministry of Education, Singapore.
Awards and Achievements:
Mr. Isack received the “Academy Award for Professional Development” from the Academy of Singapore Teachers in 2013. He was honoured for his contribution towards infusing ICT in Tamil language teaching and awarded the “Outstanding Contribution Award” in 2015. Another honour was bestowed upon him by the Singapore Book of Records in honour of his innovative project in conjunction with the Tamil Language Festival 2016. His tireless efforts to organise and facilitate a workshop cum competition on mobile app creation in Tamil helped him achieve “National Record Achiever”. A record was set by Mr. Isack by organising the Largest Mobile App Creation Competition. This event was organised in conjunction with the Tamil Language Festival 2016. He designed and facilitated a workshop on "Mobile Apps Creation in Tamil Language". Participants island-wide in Singapore took part in this national-level event and created brand-new mobile apps within 8 hours, setting a new Singapore record by creating the largest number of mobile apps in Tamil. The Singapore Book of Records awarded Mr. Louis Isack Kumar as a "National Record Achiever".
Educational Background:
Mr. Isack attained his Bachelor of Arts in Tamil Language and Literature from the University of Madras in 2005, and a Bachelor of Education in Tamil Teaching from Bharathidasan University. He obtained his Master of Education from the University of Madras in 2007, and a Master of Philosophy from Vinakaya Missions University in 2008. He also obtained his Post B.Ed. Diploma in School Administration in 2009 from Madurai Kamarajar University.
