Louis Ernest "L.E." Sola (born January 8, 1968) is a Commissioner of the United States Federal Maritime Commission and current "Cruise Czar".[1] He was nominated by President Donald Trump in November 2018 and confirmed by the US Senate during the Goverment shutdown on January 2nd, 2019 for a 5 year-term expiring June 30, 2023.[2][3][4] [5] Commissioner Sola is the current Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission's Performance Review Board and active on International Trade Bilateral delegations of the United States with the goverments of the China, Korea and the European Union.[6][7][8] Sola is considered the swing-vote on the Commision from his rulings favoring both industry and consumer interests.[9][10][11]

Sola previously ran for the United States House of Representatives seat for the 24th Congressional District of Florida as a Republican political candidate[12][13][14] against Democratic Representative Frederica Wilson but withdrew from the race before the election. Both candidates were removed from the ballot which was cited to have casued voter confusion that led to the 2018 Florida Senate election recount. [15][16][17][18]

He has received the National Defense Service Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Army Commendation Medal and has received the Army Achievement Award three times.  He is a two-time graduate of the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center, Presidio of Monterey, CA (Spanish, German).[19][20]

Sola has a master's degree from the University of Illinois where he was classmates with the future Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the future President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa.[21][22] He is also the founder and CEO of Evermarine, a Miami-based yacht brokerage company[23][24][25] which he founded in 2005.[26][27] In December 2015, Governor Rick Scott announced the appointment of Louis Sola to the Florida Board of Pilot Commissioners where he served on the probable cause panel for maritime accidents.[28][29]

Sola supported former Governor Jeb Bush's campaign for the 2016 presidential nomination, as well as U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.[30] He supported Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign by joining an open letter of 100 Business Leaders and has subsequently contributed to Trump's campaign for re-election [31] Sola has also made donations to the Republican National Committee.[24] He has been featured in national and international publications focusing on international trade and the economy to include: Forbes, American Shipper, Financial Times, Bloomberg, Sun-Sential, La Croix, and Yahoo Finance, .[32][33]
