Phra Kru Sunthon Anukit (Kring Hamso) (พระครูสุนทรานุกิจ (กริ่ง หํโส); 23 July 1898 – 26 December 1987), affectionately known as Luang Pho Kring Wat Sam Chuk or Luang Pho Kring Wat Yang, was a Thai Theravāda Buddhist monk and respected ecclesiastical administrator in Suphan Buri Province. He served as abbot of both Wat Yang (Si Prachan District) and Wat Sam Chuk (Sam Chuk District), and for over forty years was the District Monk Leader (Chao Khana Amphoe) of Sam Chuk. He is regarded as one of the most prominent monks of Suphan Buri in the 20th century.

Early life

Kring Rungratri was born on 23 July 1898 (B.E. 2441) at house No. 3, Tambon Si Prachan, Si Prachan District, Suphan Buri Province, the eldest of five children of Mr. Yam and Mrs. Tong Rungratri.[1]

He was a relative to Phra Methee Thammasarn (Sai Thammasaro), the long-serving District Monk Leader of Si Prachan and abbot of Wat Ban Krang.[2]

As a boy he learned traditional Khmer and Thai script at a local temple. In 1909 (B.E. 2452) he attended Wat Kaeo School in Bangkok (later incorporated into Wat Samphanthawong, Bangkok), where he completed primary education.

Monastic career

On 27 April 1915 (B.E. 2458), at the age of 17, he was ordained as a samanera (novice) at Wat Yang in Si Prachan District by Phra Ajahn Phong Phrommasaro, the abbot, who became his principal teacher.[1]

He received full bhikkhu ordination on 20 May 1918 (B.E. 2461) at the same temple. His preceptor (upajjhāya) was Phra Kru Pluem, abbot of Wat Phrao. He was given the Pali name Hamso (หํโส).

After ordination he continued his studies in Bangkok, first at Wat Suthat Thepwararam under Somdet Phra Mahā Samana Chao Kromma Phra Prohmmuni (later Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatanana (Pa Tissatevo)), and later at Wat Thepthidaram at the invitation of his relative Phra Samu Sai Thammasaro. He began formal Pali studies but was forced to return to Suphan Buri upon the death of his preceptor Phra Ajahn Phong. Local villagers requested that he assume responsibility for Wat Yang; he became acting abbot around 1924–1926 and was officially appointed abbot in 1933 (B.E. 2476).

In 1946 (B.E. 2489), Somdet Phra Vanarat (Phuen Tissadatto) appointed him acting District Monk Leader of Sam Chuk District. He relocated to Wat Sam Chuk, where he later became the confirmed District Monk Leader and abbot.[1]

Ecclesiastical ranks

  • 1933 – Abbot of Wat Yang; titled Phra Athikan Kring Hamso
  • 1936 – Granted the honorary title Phra Kru Prathuan
  • 1947 – Appointed Phra Kru Sanyabat, Tri class, with the title Phra Kru Sunthon Anukit
  • 1949 – Promoted to Tho class
  • 1957 – Promoted to Ek class
  • 1966 – Promoted to Special class (the highest rank for a Phra Kru Sanyabat)

Later years and death

In his later years Luang Pho Kring suffered a stroke and received treatment at the Monks’ Hospital in Bangkok and at Wat Thepthidaram. From 1985 (B.E. 2528) onward he resided permanently at Wat Yang for easier medical care.

He died peacefully at Wat Yang on 26 December 1987 (B.E. 2530) at 5:30 p.m., aged 89, having completed 70 vassa (rains retreats).[1] His royal-sponsored cremation ceremony was held at Wat Sam Chuk on 23 April 1988.[1]

Legacy

A life-size statue of Luang Pho Kring, consecrated on 21 March 1987, is enshrined in the memorial pavilion for former abbots at Wat Yang, Si Prachan District.[1]
