Luck be a Landlord is a 2021 roguelike deck building game for PC in which the player collects "symbols" to add to a slot machine to pay their rent. The game is currently in early access.
Gameplay[edit]
Luck be a Landlord is a deck building game in which the player must use a slot machine to earn coins and pay for their landlord's ever-increasing rent. The player collects symbols to add to the slot machine, which interact with each other in various ways and provide different effects.[1][2][3]
Each turn, the player spins the slot machine. The player's symbols end up in a random arrangement, after which they can interact and synergize with each other. At the end of the spin, the player is given coins depending on the results. The player is then given a choice between one of three random symbols to add to the slot machine, which can then affect subsequent spins.
Every time the player pays off their rent, they are given an "item". Unlike symbols, items take up no space on the slot machine and their effects last forever (with some exceptions). Items can have various effects, such as adding more symbols to the slot machine, giving bonuses to certain symbols, creating new synergies between symbols, or simply giving coins.
After the player pays off the final rent payment of 777 coins, the game ends. The player is given the option to go into "endless" mode. In endless mode, the rent prices start at 1,000 coins and increase by 500 each payment until the player runs out of money or manually ends the game.
Development[edit]
In October 2020, the developer ran a live stream showing a demo of the game for the Steam Autumn Festival.[4]
Luck be a Landlord was released under early access on January 8th 2021.[5] A first content patch was released a few weeks later on January 22nd, and a second on February 5th. On February 14th, 2021, the third major patch to the game was delayed due to the developer not having access to necessary healthcare.[6][7] It was later released on March 5th.[8]
Reception[edit]
On Steam, Luck be a Landlord has a "very positive" rating with over 1,000 user reviews.[5]
The game has seen success on video sharing sites such as YouTube, with several videos receiving hundreds of thousands of views.
