Lucky Benson is an American experimental filmmaker who works for The New York Times as a visual editor. Their work includes co-directing The Filmballad of Mamadada (2013).
Life and career[edit]
Lucky Benson was born in Philadelphia.[citation needed] They earned a BFA from Cooper Union in New York City and an MFA from Lund University (Malmö Art Academy) in Sweden.[1][2][3]
In 2013, with Cassandra Guan, Benson co-directed The Filmballad of Mamadada, an experimental biopic on the artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven.[4]
Their work in progress Buttery Coldness, an exploration of pick-up culture, was presented in 2016 at the Room & Board salon in New York City.[2] In 2019, an exhibition of video works by Benson at Baruch College in New York City under the title Lily Benson: Future Mechanism Replacement included Buttery Coldness together with A Tour of the Self Cleaning House, Feelings, and New Stratas. All seek to re-vision past events and characters from a feminist perspective.[1] In 2019 their work in progress Fantasy.jpeg was shown at Spectral Lines in Ridgewood, Queens together with work by Kim Hoeckele in the gallery's inaugural exhibition, Digital Déjà Vu.[3]
With the Danish artist Helene Nymann, Benson co-founded Cinema COBRA, which presents experimental film in unconventional settings.[5][6]
Benson worked for The New York Times as an art curator and then in social media. In 2020, they became a visual editor.[7]
