Luis José Paulino Costales y Govantes (La Habana,Cuba 1816 - La Habana,Cuba 1893) was a cuban medical doctor, teacher, investigator and writer.[1] He collaborated with his scientific articles in the first specialized journal of Cuban medicine called "Repertorio Médico Habanero" by Nicolás Gutiérrez in 1840.

Biography[edit]

Luis Costales was a medical doctor, university professor, researcher and for a time he served as Havana´s Mayor.[2] In 1838 he participated in the Campaign for the Eradication of Smallpox promoted by La Junta de Vacuna[3] of Cuba. By 1840 he published several articles on medical progress in "El Diario de La Habana" under the pseudonym "El Duende Habanero".[4] In 1861, together with Nicolás Gutiérrez, he co-founded the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. Luis Costales died in 1893, in his hometown, at age 77.

Repertorio Médico Habanero[edit]

From 1840 to 1843 Costales was co-editor and redactor of the magazine "Repertorio Médico Habanero", which was Cuba's first publication specialized in medicine, and was with the direction of Nicolás Gutiérrez.[5] In the first cover of the magazine He appears as Editor together Ramón Zambrana. Luis Costales wrote approximately 21 articles in 3 years of job[6] that covering general medicine, surgery, case tracking, treatments, and cures preparation of balms.

  • Ointment to soothe the pain of all kinds of ulcers, particularly those of syphilitic nature - 1843. It shows the preparation of the ointment as well as the ingredients that it carries, details the success cases in the Military Hospital of Turin.
  • Balsamic fumigations - 1843. The components of the balsam, the preparation and method of administering the medicine to cure pulmonary affections are detailed.
  • Yellow fever - 1843. A method is suggested to cure and prevent yellow fever by means of an enema oil potion during the outbreak period.
