Luis J. Echarte Fernández (born 23 April 1945 in Havana, Cuba) is a businessman who has developed his career in different companies. Echarte is vice president and Director of International and Public Relations of Grupo Salinas,[1] (Mexico).
Biography[edit]
At the age of 15, a few months after Fidel Castro seized power, he was forced to leave his native country and emigrated with his family to Miami, United States. From a very young age Echarte worked in the family's real estate and construction businesses. There he took his first steps as an entrepreneur engaging in successful business activities as a contractor.
Echarte studied Science at the University of Florida’s School of Engineering and Architecture[2] and Industrial Psychology at Memphis University.[2] He also was enrolled in the Executive Management program at Stanford University[2] and in Family Business Management at the University of Georgia.
Professional career[edit]
At the beginning of his career, Echarte was president and CEO of Echarte Development Co. in Florida, US, where he managed a real estate development of more than three thousand residential housing units.
His expertise in the international corporate world was particularly extensive when he was CEO and President of Bacardí Imports, Inc.,[3] where he implemented a worldwide strategy for Bacardi's five companies in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, and Central and South America. Echarte also developed a range of new products and regional brands and expanded the company's market with extensive distribution agreements. Among the most important products he developed were Bacardi Tropical Fruit Mixers,[4] which sold US$54 million a year and earned recognition from The Wall Street Journal as one of the best new products of 1986.
Echarte was Corporate Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Grupo Elektra,[1] a position from which he helped list the company on the New York Stock Exchange and executed the first public securitization of consumer receivables[1] in Latin America. Similarly, he served as Vice President of TV Azteca,[5] positioning and achieving tremendous recognition for the company worldwide. Echarte was also founder and CEO of the Azteca America Foundation,[1][6] a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the Latino community in the United States.
Within Grupo Salinas, he has also been the CEO of Azteca America,[7] where he implemented the distribution and affiliation strategy with stations in 60 markets reaching 88% of the Hispanic population in the United States.
Currently, Echarte is vice president and Director of International and Public Relations of Grupo Salinas,[1] a group of companies whose operations are focused on the banking, financial services, retirement savings funds, insurance, retail, media, and telecommunications industries.
Additionally, Echarte has played an active role in the boards of directors of various firms and associations such as the Punto Casa de Bolsa brokerage, Purpose Financial USA, TV Azteca,[2] Grupo Elektra,[5] and The Aspen Institute Latino and Society Program.[7] He is also a member of the Chief Executives Organization (CEO) and the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO-WPO).
