Lupus UK is a lupus awareness and patient support charity in the United Kingdom, formed[1] in November 1990 by Cheryl Marcus. Lupus UK became a fully registered charity organisation with the Charity Commission[2] on 29th December 1995. Lupus UK is also a member of The Fundraising Regulator.[3] and has been registered since 2017.

Lupus UK is entirely funded by the public, raising money through legacies, donations, community fundraising, events, retail and corporate partnerships. Lupus UK provides its information and services to the community entirely free.

Lupus UK was formerly known as the "British SLE Aid Group" (BSLEAG)[4] which was originally founded in 1978. Lupus UK was founded in November 1990 by Cheryl Marcus after her own diagnosis of Lupus in 1971.[5]

Services[edit]

Lupus UK provides a range of services to support those affected by lupus. Lupus UK also funds research into lupus and is the only charity that provides funding for Specialist Lupus Nurses in NHS hospitals, currently, there are ten Specialist Lupus Nurses that are being funded or have had funding agreed by the charity.[6]

Notable names and ambassadors[edit]

Lupus UK have featured a number of ambassadors to their charity, these ambassadors lend their name to the cause and help generate media coverage for the charity.

Dr Graham Hughes - is a world renowned Rheumatologist and Life President of Lupus UK[7] Professor Hughes assisted setting up Lupus UK as it is known today. Dr Hughes is editor of the international journal 'LUPUS'. DR Hughes initially trained at the London Hospital, however in 1969 he was offered a scholarship to train at the Rheumatology and Lupus Centre in New York. Dr Hughes set up the first Lupus Clinic at Hammersmith Hospital in 1973[8]

Janet Dean - former Member of Parliament for Burton and Uttoxeter from 1997. Janet was motivated to support Lupus UK as both her husband and mother died of lupus. Janet formed the 'All Party Parliamentary Group for Lupus'[9] and was the chair person for the group during her time in Parliament and helped to generate awareness of lupus in a government setting.

Alton Brown - is an Olympic athlete and is a representative of the Jamaican Olympic Association's national karate team. He is a European Champion, multiple World Medalist, English Champion and British Champion.[10] Alton was motivated to support Lupus UK and become an ambassador for Lupus UK as Alton has lupus and was diagnosed in 2011. Alton has appeared on Lupus UK's YouTube channel in an awareness Q&A video[11]

Beth Does Beauty (also known as Beth Smith) - is a beauty blogger and influencer known for discussing lupus and beauty. Beth was motivated to support Lupus UK following her diagnosis of lupus in October 2015 and has written for Lupus UK[12] and made video media[13] for the charity Beth became the face of Lupus UK's 2020 Lupus Awareness Month campaign[14] and poster girl for their "Lupus is only a part of my story" campaign
