Lutfunnisa Imtiyaz (b. 1761) is considered to be the first female Urdu poet (Sahibaan-e-Diwan). Not much is known about Lutfunnisa’s personal life other than her voluminous collection of poetry (divan) published in 1796. She wrote poetry at a time when literature was the exclusive domain of men. During her lifetime the social status of women was very low. Women had very little decision-making power and were regarded as the property of men; They were expected to observe purdah and were rarely allowed to go outside the house.
