Dr. Manghat Sankaran Sankaran or Dr. M. S. Sankaran, is an Indian endocrinologist[1] known for his research in the field of Endocrine Biochemistry and Physiology. His area of specialisation includes hormonal control of reproduction in mammals specifically in the areas of conception & contraception.

A recipient of Young Scientist award[2] by Indian National Science Academy (INSA). His major contributions are in the areas of comparative mammalian reproduction, hormonal regulation of pregnancy and control of fertility.

After 39 years of research, teaching and investigations he retired[3] from Hindu College, Delhi, where he served as the Head of Department, Zoology. Currently, he is settled in his native place, Thrissur in Kerala and continues his investigations towards heritage of India and its scientific foundation.

Early life[edit]

Born in a traditional family of Namboodiri's, M S Sankaran completed his graduation from the University of Kerala in 1965 and is an alumni of St. Thomas College, Thrissur.

Career[edit]

During the year 1965 he joined Delhi University for his PG course and it was during that time he met M.R.N. Prasad. Under the influence and mentorship of M.R.N Prasad, he continued his research.

His research included the extensive study of mechanism of action of a number of anti oestrogens that were pivotal in the development of post- coitally effective anti- fertility agents. He developed a profile assay for evaluation of anti oestrogens using a number of biological parameters that explained the mechanism of action of these components.

He received the Young Scientist Medal in 1974 from the Indian National Academy of Sciences for his work.

Joining the Hindu College as a lecturer in 1972 allowed him to continue his investigations It was during that time he got the opportunity to continue his research further, in mammalian reproduction, under the auspices of World Health Organisation.

He went on to work with Prof. A. G. Hendrickx at the National Primate Research Centre, University of California (Davis) U.S.A, where he worked on the efficacy of hormonal antagonists as anti implantation agents in primates.

From 1981 to 2010, he worked as the Professor of Zoology at the Hindu College, Delhi University where he was involved in coordination of research and research training.

Post-retirement[edit]

After serving as a professor in Hindu College for 39 years he retired in the year 2010 and decided to settle back in his native place Thrissur, Kerala. Settled in Urakam, Thrissur, he heads an NGO group, Prasadam Satsanga Samithy which is engaged in social service and community development. The NGO focuses on activities like community health, education, heritage and spirituality. He still actively conducts classes and lectures about Indian philosophy.
