MC Dementor (born Andres Eduardo Martinez Rodriguez, 13 September 1988) is a Colombian rapper, singer, and music manager, rated as the most relevant rapper from South American roots in the African and Caribbean market by MTV Base, MTV Latina, and VH1, also known for making history as the only rapper from a South American country involved with the Black African and English hip hop/dancehall industry. MC Dementor is the only rapper from Colombia with a real and international fan base and this rates his brand as "The most successful rapper from Colombia" as stated by several West African and USA Hip Hop media outlets. African media calls him the "African Eminem" or "White African."

Origins

Mc Dementor Bogota Guetto life on 2010

MC Dementor was born and raised in a mid-class neighbourhood in the city of Bogota, Colombia during the Medellin Cartel drug dealer war era against the Colombian government, one of the hardest times for Colombian security. During this era, over 20,000 people died during constant terrorist attacks on the main cities. Dementor, who always loved to be on the streets of Bogota, involved himself in street rap battles where he learned and perfected his rap skills. His life experiences during this era inspired him to write songs about street life and struggle. He later learned how to play the bass guitar when A&R Claudio Gonzalez discovered he had a powerful voice to sing rock music. He joined the rock band which opened rock and metal concerts in South America.

Early life and music career

MC Dementor began to play in rock concerts with his rock band singing and playing the bass guitar. They had several tours all around Colombia and South America during the period 2005 to 2010. In 2010, he finally separated from his band and decided to go solo and go back to the streets and rap because that was what he enjoyed doing more. He later recorded his first solo single titled King Kong in May 2010, which peaked at number 3 in Colombia, making him the first rap artist and rap song to be in the top 5 chart which is mainly and mostly reggaeton dominated. This earned him a performance with rap legend Kurtis Blow on Quito stadium in early 2012. He followed up with a remix featuring label mate Decordha and Hoodie.

African industry and Soulja Boy Tell 'Em

After discovering the Spanish rap industry wasn't popular internationally and knowing most South American rappers were not really big on the international music scene, MC Dementor decided to explore the African industry. The first country he approached was Sudan, as rappers such as Emmanuel Jal were doing well on the international scene. In an interview, he stated, "coming from South America and having no idea about the African music industry and always hearing the media talk about Emmanuel Jal I grew interest in Sudan hiphop." He then proceeded with getting contacts in Sudan and worked with rappers like Ace da Kiid and HoodieZilla and partnered with them and formed independent label Jump Street Records. During this period he met a West African underground rapper Decordha who had travelled to Colombia on social duties. Mc Dementor refers to the period of meeting Decordha as the most significant part of his career, where rapper Decordha helped get his career on the right track. They worked together as Decordha introduced him to A&R Jinnelle Gomez who helped him with a link with DJ Khaled to spread and promote their music on his blog wethebesttv.com and via his social media (Twitter and Facebook). They followed up with a contact with Miami Mike (Soulja Boy Tell 'Em Manager) to get Soulja Boy on one of their singles to release on the main USA and West African media outlets. The single Starz Life ft Soulja Boy Tell 'Em had regular rotations on radio and clubs in the USA. The video for Starz Life, which was an animation video, received positive reviews and was rated as the best animated video on DJ Khaleds Blog also certified by MTV Base Africa, the video was named music Anime of the century by worldstarhiphop. It was during this period when MC Dementor entered very consistently on the West African industry getting one of the biggest radio airplay and TV airplay for a hip hop song all round Africa. [1] [2]

After Starz Life, several African top artists began to work with the Colombian, one of the most relevant is LANGALANGA featuring Africa's all-time best dancehall/reggae act, Stonebwoy (2015 Best African Act BET Award Winner). This song had lots of buzz and rotation in Ghana, and other West African networks getting the interest of VP Records (The biggest reggae/dancehall independent label) to remix it with one of their artists. MC Dementor and Decordha managed to put Wayne Wonder (2003 Grammy Award Nominee) on the remix of the song and made a video to it. The remix was played for the first time on Ghana's top radio Joy fm by DJ Black (MAMA Awards best African DJ). The Video was shot in Miami florida getting Wayne Wonder and Stonebwoy on it. LangaLanga remix was rated by several Ghana and Caribbean media outlets as one of the most strategical and biggest collabs between Africa and the Caribbean having Stonebwoy and Wayne wonder on it.
