History[edit]
MILabs.[1], short for Molecular Imaging Labs, is a Dutch company headquartered in Houten, the Netherlands. MILabs was founded in 2006 by Prof. Freek Beekman[2] as a spin-off from the University Medical Centre Utrecht[3]. Their 2007 micro-SPECT scanner substantially increased both the imaging and timing resolution of mouse scans, drastically reducing the number of laboratory animals needed to answer specific research questions[4]. Today, MILabs is a global leader in preclinical molecular imaging with the development of high-performance micro-PET, micro-SPECT, micro-CT, and Optical Tomography systems, and hybrids thereof, as well as ultra-high resolution human SPECT. These imaging systems support the research of hundreds of universities and pharmaceutical companies, ranging from unraveling the origins of Parkinson's disease[4][5][6] and lung damage due to COVID-19[5][7] to the targeted treatment of cancer[5][8], to the imaging of ancient art objects[9].
In 2013, MILabs ranked 13th in the MKB Innovation Top-100[10].
In both 2015 and 2018, MILabs received the Innovation of the Year Award of the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS)[11][12].
Products[edit]
MILabs first products were U-SPECT and U-SPECT/CT systems[13][14][15][16], which today deliver sub-quarter-mm resolution in-vivo images of radiolabeled tracers.
In 2013, MILabs introduced their Versatile Emission Computed Tomography (VECTor[17]), an integrated multimodal SPECT, PET, and CT imaging technology that enables simultaneously sub-mm resolution PET and SPECT imaging. In addition, a prototype of a clinical ultra-high-resolution SPECT scanner (G-SPECT) was developed.
In 2015 MILabs launched the U-CT preclinical in-vivo micro-CT scanner, which can be integrated into existing multimodal platforms such as the MILabs SPECT/CT, PET/CT, Optical/CT and PET/SPECT/CT systems.
In 2016 MILabs launched a SPECT-based 3D autoradiography module and optical imaging modules. It enables single-run performance of SPECT, PET, bioluminescense & fluorescense tomography and micro-CT.
The latest MILabs PET technology offers positron range-free PET, also enabling simultaneous dual-isotope PET[18]
