Griffin Matthews (born December 25, 1981) is an American actor, writer, and activist. He is best known as co-writer of the musical Witness Uganda and for his role as Shane Evans on the HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant.
Career
In 2005, Matthews founded UgandaProject to support the education and basic needs of 10 young people in Uganda.[1] Matthews later wrote the musical Witness Uganda with now-husband Matt Gould based on his experiences in Uganda with the non-profit organization, as well as Gould's experience in Mauritania with the Peace Corps. The musical premiered in 2014 at the American Repertory Theatre and transferred to Off-Broadway in 2015 under the name Invisible Thread. Matthews also starred as the lead character, Griffin.
Matthews called Diane Paulus, the director of his work Witness Uganda, an "Amy Cooper", a metaphor for a type of white person in the theater industry that demeaned the work and contributions of African-Americans. On June 1, 2020, he said on Twitter:
“The thing about [Broadway] Amy Cooper is, she is a liberal, she is an artistic director, she is a Tony winner, she is a producer, she teaches at Harvard, she is charismatic, she is an excellent public speaker and fundraiser, she puts on pretty dresses and speaks eloquently about how much she cares about diversity and inclusion. She has made her entire career about that. She works with black people. She believes she loves black people. She buys their work. And then, behind closed doors, she steals it.”[1]
In 2019, Matthews appeared in Volume 3 of the Netflix series, Dear White People as D'Unte.
In 2020, Matthews appeared in the series, The Flight Attendant as Shane Evans.
