Matthew Raymond Guzmán (born January 10, 1994), known professionally as MRG, is a Dominican-American New York City rapper, singer, and songwriter.[1] After ending his baseball career due to an injury, the Queens, NY native began creating music.[2] His heritage and New York roots inspire his clever lyrics and melodic rap style[3]. After releasing several singles and gaining traction, MRG was invited to XXL’s The Break, a series for upcoming artists for an interview and freestyle.[4] MRG released his first full-length LP, Live from the Hurst 2, on October 25, 2019, in partnership with his label, Westvilla Music.[5]
Early life and career[edit]
After tearing his ACL, MRG began his pursuit in music starting a rap group alongside his friends at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School (The Bronx, NY). At Fieldston, he was a standout baseball player and was a member of the New York Post’s All City Team[6][7]. During the summer, he also played travel baseball alongside teammate Harrison Bader[8]. During his childhood days, he was admitted to Prep for Prep, a program "that offers promising students of color access to a private school education."[9]
While commuting 3 hours everyday to attend the private high school, MRG used music as a way to make friends and connect with people in his new environment. He continued his musical pursuits throughout high school and into his days as a student at Villanova University, where he connected with Daniel Ochefu, his current manager.[10] With the assistance of fellow colleagues and national champions Daniel Ochefu, Kris Jenkins, and Ryan Arcidiacono, MRG was invited by Jay Wright to open up Villanova’s 2016 Hoops Mania, alongside artist Wiz Khalifa.[11][12]
