M. Alex O. Vasilescu is a Romanian-American computer scientist, known for introducing a unified tensor factor analysis framework for causal inference with applications in computer vision, computer graphics, and machine learning. Computer graphics and computer vison, also known as forward and inverse imaging, were treated as analogues of forward and inverse causal inference. This line of work caught the attention of the academic and popular press with her research on TensorFaces and Human Motion Signatures. TensorFaces[1][2] models the mechanism that generated data, and disentangles the underlying causal factor representations, such as identity, viewpoint, and illumination. Multilinear (Tensor) Independent Component Analysis[6](2005,2004) which employed higher order statistics, "strongly influenced" the direction of research in deep neural learning, as mentioned in the article "Disentangling factors of variation via generative entangling", 2012 published by the team led by Turing Award winner, Yoshua Bengio.[7] Yoshua Bengio and Aaron Courville reiterated the conceptual link between deep learning architectures and tensorial/multilinear factorization in the book called "Handbook on Neural Information Processing.[8] Vasilescu in Causal Deep Learning (2024),[9] made this relationship explicit. The Natioanal Academies of Sciences awarded the Keck Futures Initiative grant[10], and MIT's Technology Review magazine named her as TR100 honoree[11]. Her research on TensorFaces[1], Human Motion Signatures[12][13] and TensorTextures[14][15][16] has been widely recognized, including features on the cover of Computer World (Canada)[17] and in publications such as the New York Times.[18], Washington Times[13] and National Post Canada.[19] Vasilescu was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Toronto.
