The Madras Management Association (MMA) is an industry association in India.

MMA is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization. Founded in 1956, it has over 8,000 members, from the individual, student and Corporate sectors, including Small and Medium Industries.

History[edit]

Madras Institute of Management (MIM) was founded in August 1956 by Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, the illustrious Vice-Chancellor of Madras University and a well known Indian educationist and physician along with 9 other illustrious Management professionals of Madras (now known as Chennai. MIM was formally inaugurated with twenty institutional members on September 19, 1956. On becoming an affiliate of All India Management Association (AIMA), in 1957 the name MIM was changed to Madras Management Association (MMA) and has been the same ever since. MMA is registered at a not-for-profit body under the Societies Act

Management[edit]

The Managing Committee is elected annually in the Annual General Meeting. For 2020-21, the Managing Committee is headed by Mr A Venkataramani, Managing Director, India Pistons Ltd., as President. Apart from corporate leaders, MMA has, in its Managing Committee, the Vice Chancellors of Madras University & Anna University, the Directors of Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Institute for Financial Management and Research and the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, as ex-officio members.

A secretariat headed by Gp. Capt. R. Vijayakumar (Retd), Executive Director manages the day to day administration and events.

Objectives[edit]

The prime objective is to promote management education, training, thought and development. MMA strives to develop and nurture management expertise, combining Indian ethos with International Management thoughts and practices. A number of Conventions, Seminars, Symposiums, Panel Discussions, Talks by Management Experts and accomplished Business Leaders are organized regularly. MMA works in collaboration with various professional organisations with an aim to bring the best speakers from around the globe for the benefit of MMA members.

Activities[edit]

MMA has over 8000 corporate houses, industries, professionals, academics and executives on its rolls as members. MMA annually organizes on an average, 750 executive development activities, including seminars for top management with a total participation of about forty thousand executives and entrepreneurs in a year

MMA has grown to be the largest affiliate of All India Management Association (AIMA) and has emerged as an inspiring role model for other Local Management Associations (LMA) in the country. Over the past 6 decades, MMA has striven for development and nurturing management expertise, combining Indian ethos with International Management thoughts and practices. MMA has been adjudged as the Best Management Association in India by AIMA for ten times in a row including the recipient of the National Excellence Award for the year 2017-18.[1] [2] [3] [4]

Annual Management Convention[edit]

The theme-based Annual Convention of MMA is a high-point in business events in Chennai. It attracts over 800 delegates from all over India every year. It has built up a reputation for the high quality of its contents. MMA Annual Convention is not just a major event, but an occasion marked for all managers to widen their knowledge and broaden their perspectives in the field. The Annual Convention is normally held during Jan-Feb each year. [5]

Annual Women Managers’ Convention[edit]

The Women Managers’ Forum of Madras Management Association focuses on issues of special interest to women executives and entrepreneurs that can help them improve their professional excellence. This Forum has been successfully organising programmes addressing women managers’ related issues. The Women Managers Convention is held in the month of March each year commemorating on the International Women’s Day. The Women Managers’ Convention is attended by more than 700 women managers and entrepreneurs every year. [6]


Management Students’ Convention[edit]

MMA has been organizing annually the All India Management Students’ Convention (MSC) for future architects of Indian economy and growth, the Management Students. This unique opportunity provides young management students from all over India a platform to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity and leadership skills so as to prepare them to be global leaders. Held normally during September – October every year, the Management Students Convention is attended by more than 1500 management students from all over India.

MMA Awards[edit]

MMA instituted various awards for promotional excellence and contribution to the society in different categories for industries, entrepreneurs, innovators, accomplished business leaders, management professionals and students. Following are the coveted MMA awards presented currently.

The MMA-Amalgamations Business Leadership Award. This award was instituted in 1969 by the late Mr. A Sivasailam in memory of his father the late S Anantharamakrishnan,, founder of the Amalgamations Group. The award is presented once in two years to an Indian business leader, adjudged as outstanding by a panel of eminent jurors forming the selection committee. The last recipient of the MMA-Amalgamations Business Leadership Award was Mr.Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Group. Previous recipients of the award include:

MMA Awards for Managerial Excellence. MMA is focused on promoting knowledge, education and practice of good management. In keeping with this tradition, MMA had instituted "MMA Awards for Managerial Excellence" in 2002 to recognize excellence in managerial thinking, action, and demonstrable results to companies and institutions that have their corporate or registered office in southern states. The Award evaluates many facets of the organization, such as vision, goals, financial performance, initiatives thrown, corporate social responsibility, quality of management processes, and growth in market share. Award is presented in four categories, namely the Manufacturing Sector, SME Sector, Serivces Sector and the Educational Institutions

MMA-CavinKare Chinnikrishnan Innovation Awards. In the year 2011, CavinKare launched Chinnikrishnan Innovation Awards, in memory of Late Shri R Chinnikrishnan (Father of Mr. C K Ranganathan, Chairman & Managing Director, CavinKarePvt Ltd). Mr.Chinnikrishnan had a vision and believed that 'whatever a rich man enjoys, a common man should be able to afford'. Since its inception, Chinnikrishnan Innovation Awards have stood out in its steadfast support of innovative ventures started by small and tiny industries, businessmen and businesswomen.

MMA Best Young Manager Award. Since 1996, MMA has been organizing the MMA Competition for Young Managers to recognise the Best Young Manger of the year. This competition provides opportunities to young managers to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, professional excellence and creativity in the larger interest of the management community. The Competition is held every year as a run-up to the MMA Annual Convention on the same theme as the Convention and is restricted to Managers below 40 years of age.

The MMA Outstanding Woman Manager of the Year Award. The MMA Competition for the Outstanding Woman Manager of the Year Award is a part of MMA's effort to help the Women Managers improve their professional excellence. The Competition is held every year since 2002 as a run up to the Women Managers' Convention organised on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Chanakya the Mastermind Award MMA's "Chanakya - The Mastermind" Award was instituted in the year 2010.The award is bestowed after a contest is held to identify the Best Potential Manager of the year. On an average MMA received over 4000 entries for the Competition from all over India and applicants were screened on the basis of their (a) Past academic performance, (b) Significant achievements, (c) Significant competitions won and awards obtained and (d) an essay on the subject "Why am I the Best manager?" (e) Group Discussions (f) Extempore Speech and Psychometric Tests. The contest is grilling but rewarding with a prize money of Rs One Lakh.

Online courses conducted[edit]

MMA conducts class room training in the form of certificate courses and workshops covering various subjects of the management, for the benefit of working professionals and students. MMA offers training training programmes through webinars, both paid and complimentary for the benefit of members.

Student Wing[edit]

MMA works with management students in empowering them with contemporary management wisdom and providing them a practical industry perspective on various management topics. MMA Student Chapters are established in over 40 educational institutions in Tamil Nadu with about 4000 student members every year.

Chapters[edit]

Organising successful programmes in and around Chennai for over 6 decades, it was felt absolutely vital and necessary that such programs are carried to smaller cities/towns outside Chennai in order to face up to the challenges of globalization and in order to take professional management to these fast growing areas where the real growth is going to come from. Recognizing this fact and with a view to spread excellence in management across the state, MMA as part of its strategy enlarged its activities to the areas beyond Chennai so that the industry in all those cities with specific emphasis on Small & Medium Enterprises would benefit. As part of its “Going Beyond Chennai” activities, MMA currently has chapters at Ambur, Attur, Erode, Hosur, Namakkal, Salem, Sri City, Trichy and Puducherry.

New Building[edit]

MMA Management Center was inaugurated on 17th January 2018 by the Shri M Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Vice President of India. The Building which is solar powered is equipped with a Seminar Hall with 325 seating capacity, State of the Art Library, Class rooms, Board Room and ample parking facilities including special provisions for the physically disabled.

Future Plans[edit]

Currently MMA has good presence on social media and most of the MMA programmes are webcast live. In the next few years, MMA aims to strengthen its digital platforms so as to conduct more training sessions online and also be able to connect with all the management professionals and management students in each district of Tamil Nadu besides the numerous MMA members in different corners of the globe.
