Mafar (Arabic: مفر‎‎; translated as The Escape) is a Palestinian five-member alternative indie rock band. The band was formed in Palestine, Bethlehem in 2014 by the vocalist Jeries Babish and the guitarist Marwan Samamreh. The idea was to recreate a base for the alternative music in Palestine and build a new scene for the independent music in general. Untitled is the first album for Mafar released in July 2016 and it contains 9 songs.[1][2]

History[edit]

Background and name[edit]

Mafar was formed in September 2014 when Marwan and Jeries first met in Bethlehem University to share thoughts and knowledge about music. They came up with an idea of forming a band and playing different genres locally, but they settled on playing alternative indie rock and reform the band to include a drummer, a pianist, a lead guitarist and audio engineer. "Mafar" Means (The Escape) which describes life as the maze that people want to escape from. The band is known for their critical lyrics about social and political problems.[3][4][5]

The band firstly started to play in small shows and venues including opening acts for famous local bands and get popular. Today, the band plays in some of the biggest festivals in Palestine including Bet Lahem Live Festival, Shepherds Beer Festival, Taybeh Oktoberfest, Christmas Festival in Bethlehem, Dandanat music Festival and Pam Fest. The Palestinian band went internationally by playing in Morocco where they won the second place among many Arab countries in The Arab Festival for Music in the Moroccan city "Guelmim", and also got three individual prizes and also played in Amman - Jordan.[6][7]

Mafar's debut album Untitled was produced independently by the 5 main members. Untitled talks about a main social theme which is to fight strongly in order to achieve dreams, with an Artwork for a planet that looks like The Earth after being hit with meteors which represents the invasion of the negative thoughts and reasons affecting the world today.[8][9]

The album was recorded & mixed at Mixhouse Studios by Issa Sacaan in Bethlehem city in Palestine and mastered by Mercury Mastering Records in California. The album songs were composed and written by the main vocalist Jeries Babish, the "Intro" was composed by the Keyboardist Raji Ghareeb, whereas Fatah 'Eneih, Ana Malet and Nsina El 'Inwan were written by Anas Shweiki, a friend of the band. 2d lyrics Videos and Nsina El 'Inwan were Directed by Elias Sabat - SABAT films. Artwork by Caitlin Fogerty and Art Design by Fadi Dahabrah.[10][11]

Its is also noteworthy that Amir Handal from Apo and The Apostles band and Khalil Turjman from El Container band were a part of recording the Bass Lines in the Album.
