"Magic shop" is a song by South Korean boy band BTS, it is co-written and co-produced by the youngest member, Jungkook, and it is a song dedicated to their fans. This song is a B-side from their third Korean studio album, Love Yourself: Tear and it was released on May 18, 2018. Magic shop is inspired by the book “Into the Magic Shop” by James R. Doty which explores the idea of opening a door in one's heart when in pain and finding a place of healing. In the song, BTS is telling their fans that they are not alone and can open the door to the magic shop whenever needed.

Initially debuted as a B-side of the album Love Yourself: Tear, "Magic shop" was later seen as the first track on their next album Love Yourself: Answer.

Recording[edit]

Four members were involved in the writing process of "Magic shop"- RM, Suga, J-hope, and Jungkook. RM is one of BTS's main writer and so is Suga and J-hope. Meanwhile, Jungkook does not write songs very often nor does he compose songs. He is BTS's main vocalist, dancer, composer, and now a writer and producer. To contribute to BTS's Love Myself Campaign, Jungkook wrote "Magic shop" while keeping his fans in his mind. He made sure the lyrics were comforting and had meaning. While writing, RM took inspiration from Professor James R. Doty's book "Into the Magic Shop". He incorporated a psychodrama technique in the song which is talked about in Professor Doty's book. This [[technique "involves exchanging negative aspects of self for positive ones,"[1] RM used this idea by encouraging fans to turn to BTS whenever they are feeling down and replace those negative feelings with positive affirmations provided in the song.

Music and lyrics[edit]

"Magic Shop" is mainly a k-pop, hip-hop song that also has rap in it and can be described as electronic dance music. The instrumental of the track was composed in 4

common time
in the key of C minor with a tempo of 135 beats per minute.[2] Adora, who took part in writing and composing the song, supports the members with her background vocals throughout the song. The four members worked alongside producer Hiss Noise to produce the song.

The song starts off with a catchy electro instrumental and gets into the first verse by V and Jungkook. The two of them tell their fans that they are willing to share their hardships instead of giving their fans false hopes. The chorus starts off with member Jin getting into the idea of opening a door in your heart and calling it a magic shop.[3] The members encourage fans to open this gateway in their hearts on days they feel down which is the idea inspired by Professor Doty's book. The book "Into the Magic Shop" was published in 2016 but became a bestseller in Korea in 2018 because of the song "Love Yourself: TearMagic Shop". It was then translated into 31 languages and its sales went up. Professor Doty tweeted a "thank you" to BTS after the book became a bestseller.[4]
