Biography[edit]

Magsud Gurbanov was born on May 09, 1941, in Sharur, Azerbaijan SSR, Soviet Union. His father was born in the Sharur District of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Biography[edit]

He graduated from Baku State University in 1970. Laboratory assistant at the Institute of Botany in 1966-1968, junior researcher in 1971-1977, senior researcher in 1977-1988, leading researcher in 1988-2000, in the Central Botanical Garden of ANAS in 2000-2002. Leading researcher, has been working as a senior researcher since 2002. In 1975 he received the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences, and in 1986 he received the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences. In 1985 he was awarded the title of senior researcher, and in 2010 he was awarded the title of professor. In 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS. Conducts important theoretical and applied research on the problems of introduction, acclimatization, ecology and seed science of plants. He developed a method for evaluating the success of plant introduction, a method for improving the quality of seeds using biologically active substances, a method for X-ray analysis of seeds and an objective division for assessing the quality of seeds. For the first time, the "Method of X-ray analysis of woody plant seeds" was developed in the form of a state standard and is applied in production in the former USSR. He is the author of more than 140 scientific works written on the basis of scientific evidence, including 2 monographs and 2 methodical aids. He is a member of the CIS Seed and Seed Commission, and in the South Caucasus he is the chairman of the commission of the same name. He coordinates scientific research in the region. He is a member of the Scientific Council, has a service in staff training. Has prepared 6 doctors of philosophy and one doctor of sciences in biological and agricultural sciences. He is an honorary advisor to the American Biographical Institute and an honorary citizen of Giresun, Turkey.

Scientific achievements[edit]

He developed methods such as evaluating the success of plant introduction, improving seed quality with biologically active substances, X-ray analysis of seeds, objective distribution to assess seed quality, forecasting plant growth, fruit and seed production processes through mathematical modeling. He proposed a method of hybridization of different ploidy individuals to increase the viability of polyploid plant seeds, developed a universal classification for X-ray analysis of seeds. Classified the ecological groups of plants according to their responses to toxic industrial wastes, developed and applied digital and alphanumeric polytomic designation keys for non-traditional methods of identification of fruits and seeds, as well as plants according to the complete biomorphological characteristics of individuals.
