Mahmoud Shoolizadeh (Persian: محمود شولیزاده‎ born in Abadan, Iran) is a film director, film producer, screenwriter, actor and film festival judge.[1][2][3][4] He has been involved in the production of over fifty films, including long feature films, short films, documentaries, and fiction.[5]

Shoolizadeh has been the recipient of several awards including best film at the 49th Taormina International Film Festival[1], best film at the 15th Moondance International Film Festival[1] and best American film at the Toronto International Film Festival,[6] among others.[7][8][9][10]

Shoolizadeh was born in Abadan, Iran as one of eight children of an oil field worker. Early in life, he became obsessed with American movies, and dreamed of making movies of his own.[2] In 1984 he enrolled at the College of Cinema and TV in Tehran where he studied filmmaking.

Shoolizadeh's early works were primarily short films and documentary series made for Iranian television. Noora (The Kiss of Life) (2002) was his first feature length fiction film that he wrote and directed, which earned several international film festival awards and appearances including Best Feature Film at the 49th Taormina International Film Festival in 2003.[1][11][12][13][14]

In 2002 Shoolizadeh moved to London, United Kingdom, where he produced and directed films including the documentaries A man called Brian (2005) and Homeless (2006).[4]

In 2010 he moved to Florida in the United States and continued to win awards at film festivals with his short films The Prisoner (2013),[15][16] The Debt (2014),[3][17] Daddy (2015)[18][19][20] and The Lover (2016).[7]

His most recent feature film, Susan (2018) has received festival awards including Best UK Narrative-Feature Film at the 2019 London International Motion Picture Awards[21], Best International Feature Film at the 2019 Olympus International Film Festival, Best Feature Film at the 2019 Mediterranean Film Festival Cannes,[22] Best Drama Film, Best Director and Best Editing[23] at the 2018 Five Continents International Film Festival in November 2018, and Best Feature Fiction Film[24] at the 2019 Branson Film Festival.
