Mahsa Amini (Persian: مهسا امینی), also known as Jina Amini or Zhina Amini (Persian: ژینا امینی; Kurdish: ژینا ئەمینی) (2000 - 2022) was an Iranian woman who suffered skull fractures and brain death on September 13, 2022, after being arrested by the Guidance Patrol in Tehran.[1][2][3][4][5] She died three days later, on September 16, 2022, from the severity of her injuries sustained in a Hospital in Tehran.[6][7] Her death sparked widespread reactions and protests in various parts of Iran and the world known as Mahsa Amini protests.[8][9][10][11]
Mahsa Amini is known as the symbole of freedom for all Iranian people and millions of people around the world.[12][13][14]
Biography[edit]
Mahsa was born in 2000 to a Kurdish family in Saqqez, Iran. She was brought up in her hometown with her family. She had just been admitted to university before her death and liked to be a lawyer after her graduation. Her father, Amjad Amini is an employee in a governmental organization. Also she had a brother.[15][16]
Etymology[edit]
Mahsa was the name of her birth certificate and Jina (Zhina) was her name in Kurdish. In persian "Mahsa" means "Similar to the moon"[17] and in Kurdish, Jina means "life" and "a life-giving person".[18]
Arrest[edit]
Mahsa Amini had traveled to Tehran with her family in September 2022 to visit her family from Saqqez. She was arrested by Guidance Patrol officers around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, near Haqqani metro station on Haqqani Highway, while she was with her brother, Kiarash.[19] After Kiarash protested, he was told that she had been transferred to the detention center to pass a "briefing class" and would be released in an hour.[20][21] At the mean time eyewitnesses who were there reported that she was beaten in the Guidance Patrol vehicle and detention center.[22] Amini's family also announced that a fight broke out during her detention and that authorities had beaten her brother.[23][24] Mahsa's uncle said:[25]
"Mahsa's brother was there and when he wanted to resist and not allow them to arrest Mahsa, they gassed and dispersed tear gas."
Two hours after Amini's arrest and transfer to the Tehran Moral Security Police, she suffered brain death due to skull injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit of Kasra Hospital.[26] While her brother was waiting for his sister in front of detention center building, he saw an ambulance leaving the building. He asks one of the soldiers about the cause of the ambulance leaving the building and is told that "one of the soldiers was injured." After showing her sister's photo to other girls released from the detention center, she discovers that the ambulance was carrying his sister's half-life body.[27]
Death[edit]
Mahsa Amini died three days later, on September 16, 2022, at Kasra Hospital in Tehran. "She was perfectly healthy before she was arrested," Mahsa's mother, Mojgan Eftiri, said shortly before Mahsa's death.[28][29][30][31]
Eyewitness[edit]
Several of the detainees themselves, who were in the same patrol car along with Mahsa Amini, confirmed in interviews the physical violence and severe beatings of police forces against Mahsa Amini, which fractured her skull, and they also announced that they had taken Mahsa to the hospital late.[32]
Burial[edit]
On the morning of September 17, Amini's body was transferred to Saqqez and she was buried in Aichi Cemetery with a large turnout as well as security forces. While security forces intended to bury her at night without the presence of the people, they prevented her family from confronting her. Also, on the day of the burial, the police blocked the roads leading to the city of Saqqez to prevent more people from attending. Protesters at her funeral chanted slogans such as "Death to the dictator".[33][34][35][36]
Reactions[edit]
Mahsa Amini's arrest and beating by the Guidance Patrol and her coma have sparked public outrage in society and on social media. Her death provoked widespread reactions both domestic and internationally.[37][38] Many Iranian and international politicians, celebrities, artists, personalities, parties and institutions reacted to it. Her death also sparked widespread protests.[39][40][41] Coverage of Mahsa Amini's coma from social media and media outlets outside Iran entered the domestic and official media and news agencies. Government officials in Iran tried to seize the news space for her death and to hold Iran's judicial, executive, legislative and security system accountable and sensitive to the incident. However, the government and the state media did not have the power to control the dimensions and potential of the event and were unable to convince public opinion and contain the flood of public anger and protests.[42][43][44]
Reactions to her killing by people all around the world caused the Persian hashtag #مهسا_امینی and #MahsaAmini cross the border with 200 million tweets and retweet Trend globally and break the world record of Twitter history.[45][46][47][48]
Symbole of freedom[edit]
Mahsa Amini is the code word for mass protests in Iran.[49] She is also a symbol of the freedom of Iranians particularly women and many people around the world in a way that now tied the protests of Iranians with her name.[50][51]
