Mahtem Shifferaw

Mahtem Shifferraw is an Ethiopian and Eritrean writer, editor, poet and artist.

Early life and education[edit]

Mahtem Shiferraw is from Ethiopia and Eritrea. She states that she has "always written poetry, since as long [she] can remember."[1] She began writing poetry in Italian and then Ahmaric, and later learned to write in English when she attended Vermont College where she earned her MFA in creative writing.

Career[edit]

Shiferraw has worked as an editor for several publications including the Atlas and Alice, The Bleeding Lion, and The Hunger Mountain.

Her work has been published in The 2River View, Cactus Heart Press, Blood Lotus Literary Journal, Luna Luna Magazine, Mandala Literary Journal, Blackberry: A Magazine, Diverse Voices Quarterly, The Bitter Oleander Press, Callaloo Literary Journal, and many other places.[2]

She has served as a jury member for literary prizes including the Neudstat International Prize for Literature, the Brunel International African Poetry Prize, and the Lucy Munro Brooker Prize.[3]

In 2015, Shifferraw founded Anaphora Arts, a nonprofit "dedicated to promoting the literary and artistic work of traditionally underrepresented groups and minorities, with a particular focus on writers and artists of color", and currently serves as its executive director.[4]
