Makimuku Katsuyama Kofun is a Kofun found on the premises of Makimuku ruins[1].It is a Kofun of Makimuku ruins, and considered a transitional Kofun from the scallop-type kofun of earlier times to the keyhole shaped Kofun that would dominate later.[2]:249

The Makimuku ruins, have been very important in providing information for new chronologies of Ancient Japan. Hashihaka Kofun is the most famous member of the ruins. Two significant burial mounds from this region, namely the Makimuku Ishizuka [ja] and Makimuku Katsuyama, have provided dendrochronological evidence that suggests revisions to established ceramic chronologies.[1]

Dating[edit]

The Kofun is dated to around 200CE, with the nearby Makimuku Ishizuka Kofun [ja] being dated to around 180AD.[3]

It is considered a transitional Kofun from the scallop-type kofun of earlier times to the keyhole shaped Kofun that would dominate later, so its chrronological position is notable.[2]:249

In the 1990s, a wooden board from the Makimuku Ishizuka Kofun [ja] was dated to 177 CE with dendrochronology. In 2001, other wood remains from the Makimuku Katsuyama Kofun were dated between 103 and 199 CE. These findings imply construction dates around 180 CE for Makimuku Ishizuka and approximately 200 CE for Makimuku Katsuyama.[3]
