Malik b. al-RaybArabic: مالك بن الريب, d. 60/680) was one of the Arab poets who lived in the Umayyad period. He did not succeed in becoming as famous as his contemporaries. However, it is said that he was as talented as his contemporaries.[1]

Life[edit]

Malik b. er-Reyb became famous at the beginning of the Umayyad period. The name of the poet is recorded among the sa'âlik, that is, outcast poets. It is said that after he satirized al-Hajjaj, he became a fugitive and blocked roads during these days. In this process, he worked with the famous bandit Shizaz al-Dabbi. Following his encounter with Sa'id b. Uthman, he repented of banditry and began to follow a religious life style. His fifty-seven couplet ode, which he composed in the last days of his life, is extremely famous. A legend claims that the jinn placed this eulogy next to the poets bed.[2] Other famous odes of the poet are his poems about how he survived an unsuccessful assassination attempt.[3]
