Malysh i Karlson, also known as Junior and Karlson, and The Kid and Karlson, is a 1968 soviet cartoon film written by Boris Larin and directed by Boris Stepantsev, based on the Karlsson-on-the-Roof book series by Astrid Lindgren. Due to its short runtime and Soviet origins, the cartoon is not well known in Western countries.

Plot[edit]

A boy named Malysh is the youngest of the three children in a Swedish family. Being the youngest, he develops an acute sense of solitude, and has an overactive imagination. He wants a dog as a companion, but before he can get one, he "invents" a friend - the very Karlson who lives upon the roof.

Cast[edit]

Legacy[edit]

The film was followed by Karlson Returns in 1970. The characters were also in "Malysh i Karlson, kotoryy zhivyot na kryshe", a 1971 TV movie.

The 1986 cartoon short "Unwantie" has a scene where Nekhochukha watches the Malysh i Karlson short on the TV. The cartoon also appears in the 2018 Kazakh Horror film "Qarakoz", or "Camp Fire Stories".

Rerelease[edit]

The 1968 film was re-released in Poland on November 4th, 2017 as part of the Sputnik Russian Film Festival which specializes in Russian cinema.
