Manav Thakkar Vikash is an Indian-born paddler who is a former world No.1 in the U-18 circuit. He is currently ranked No.2 in the World and is India's top Table Tennis Player. He also plays for the Empowerji Challengers in the CEAT UTT League. He is supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance Programme.[7][8]

Early life and background

Manav’s mother and father were both regular Table Tennis players, and Manav picked it up watching them play at the age of 6. The love for the game turned into passion, and Manav started playing competitive table tennis at the tender age of 8. He quotes “I was shorter than the table but still managed to return the ball three-four times,” said Thakkar, who also was a skater back then. He was initially guided by his childhood coach Vahed Malubhai. In 2011, he shifted to Ajmer and joined the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB).[9]

Career

At the age of 8, he was already a state champion and joined PSPB when he was 12, where he has been training since. He aims to win medals for India on the big stage but knows that he needs to regularly improve mentally and physically to do that to keep growing as a player. Manav has clinched several medals including Gold in the junior category at the 2015 SAF Games and the 2016 Indian Open International Indoor. Internationally he has won Silver medals at the Slovak Junior Open and Polish Junior and Cadet Open. He is now competing with the best of Indian Paddlers, Sharath Kamal and Harsheel Desai. He has played a total of 392 matches and has a 72% win percentage.
