Mangalapuram, formerly Mathura Mangalapuram, is a village located in the Viluppuram district in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India.

Annunciation of Virgin Mary Church

Mangalapuram is the only Village in Tamil Nadu which celebrates the Annunciation of Mother Mary. The festival starts with flag hoisting and endures for nine days. The feast day (25th March) prayers are said in Tamil. The Lady came floating in her car, shouldered by her foot soldiers of faith. And as she floated along the teeming thousands, her faithful knelt, some with open palms, some with absolute supplication – each with their own reason for reverence and surrender. And for once, absolute supplication looked endearing – with each believer soaking in the beauty of Our Lady of Health, with star-lit eyes and prayers galore. For the thousands, who had thronged and lodged themselves hours before the procession, it was a penance of sorts – one that saw its expression in their star-lit eyes, rested bodies, and pleading-open palms in defenseless submission to the lady almighty - as calls for ‘peace among nations' and ‘love among people' were made along the trail of the cars. It is said that those who shouldered the car would be decided by the Parish on the basis of requests made by the faithful. While, the smaller cars were shouldered by women and the bigger ones by men.

It was as if the grandeur of the event could only be matched by the grandeur of the reverence of the thousands gathered there.

Claretians

The Claretians, a community of Roman Catholic priests and brothers, were founded by Saint Anthony Claret in 1849. Their ministries are highly diverse and vary depending on the needs of the area. They focus on seeing life through the eyes of the poor and responding to the biggest need at the time. They have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their formal title is the Congregation of Missionaries, Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary (abbreviation C.M.F for Cordis Mariae Filii, but they are popularly known as "the Claretians".

Ministry Among the Dalits, Kavasam - Mangalapuram

  • Multipurpose Community Centre is being established to work in solidarity with dalit people’s movements for their holistic liberation
  • Community Development Organisation - Giving awareness programs about their human dignity and rights.

Art & Cultural Programme - The music, dance and other art forms of the natives are at the verge of extinction and those of the dominant are projected as the culture and the art of the country. Development of masses includes promotion of their culture too. Training and popularization of Dalit and folk arts are part and parcel of the mission of Kavasam. Cultural Groups called ‘VeeraMulakkam’ in Kakanur and VettriMurasuKalaikuzhu in Villiavarambal are formed for the development of the culture.

Reflexology treatment

Kavasam offers Reflexology three times per week usually on (Sat, and Tue). Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a pseudoscientific[1] system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.[2]
