Manuel Vizmanos
Manuel Vizmanos Barnuevo[note 1] (Cirujales del Río, Soria, 17 September 1902 - Cartagena, 6 March 1938[1]) was a Spanish soldier who died on the Spanish cruiser Baleares.[2]
History
Manuel was born in a small town in the province of Soria, in 1902. When he was 17, he moved to Madrid, to become military.[3]
With the recommendation of his sister, he studied mathematics, starting in 1923, where he met Julio Rey Pastor, a well-known Spanish mathematician.[4] He promised his sister that he would "study pure mathematics after Alfonso XIII exiles".[5]
Death
Manuel was one of the 800 soldiers who died on the Spanish cruiser Baleares, on the morning of 6 March 1938.[6] He was never found, and until 2001, his body was misidentified.[7]
Notes
- ↑ It is not known if Barnuevo was part of his family name. His mother’s name remains unknown, but is only known because of a note signed by A. Barnuevo, which was found in Manuel's diary.
