History[edit]

Spain organizes its national phase since 1964, but it was not until 1983 when it entered the Olympiad.[4] In 1988, the Ministry of Science and Education created the coordinating commission for the Spanish participation in the International Mathematical Olympiads.[5] In 2008, Spain organized the International Mathematical Olympiad.[6] In 2013, some events were organized to celebrate the fifty anniversary of the Spanish Mathematical Olympiad.[7] In 2018, the Government of Spain declined paying the cost of the International Mathematical Olympiad to the participants.[8]

Spain competes at the Iberoamerican Mathematics Olympiad.[9]

Spain has 0 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 56 bronze medals and 59 honourable mentions.[10]

Selection process[edit]

The selection criteria consists of two steps, a local one, in January, and a national one, where the best classified of each local attend, in April or May.[11][12][13] In some local steps, another step is made before the local one to select a reduced number of students.[14]
