Marcel Weyers (born October 16, 1991, real name Marcel Sohrmann) is a German writer and translator. He is best known for the first official translations of visual novels into German, his visual novels Sleepless Night and This Is Where I Want To Die as well as his five-part novel series Raven Saga.
Life[edit]
Weyers studied English and German with a focus on literature at Justus Liebig University and graduated in 2014. Before that, he wrote his first stories and novels; his Shadow Trilogy, which he wrote at the age of 15, was published by Kubayamashi-Do Studien- und Fachbuchverlag in 2011. The three-part novel series is set in Japan and was inspired by mangas and animes.[1][2] In August 2014, his short novel Raven Blood – Awakened in the Dead of Night (German: Rabenblut – In dunkelster Nacht erwacht) was published, which was the first installment of a five-part novel series.[3] The Raven Saga was completed in February 2018. Translations into English, Italian, Spanish and Russian followed. His fantasy novel Depths of Forever was published in September 2016. Currently he lives with his husband in Dresden.
Translations[edit]
Weyers has worked as a translator on over 250 video games to date, including in particular visual novels and adventure games.
In a 2019 interview with IT magazine Golem, he talked about his work as a video game translator. On October 12, 2019, he gave a talk on video game localization at the PAX Aus gaming trade show in Melbourne, Australia.[4]
He became known as a visual novel translator mainly through the official translation of RE: Alistair from sakevisual as well as through the translations of the developer ROSEVERTE – including Café 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~ and How To Take Off Your Mask. Well-known adventure games Weyers has translated include Whispering Willows by Night Light Interactive, Sunset by Tale of Tales, and Demetrios by COWCAT, whose translation was highly acclaimed by Adventure-Treff.[5] His translation of the indexed Shoot 'em up video game Hatred by Destructive Creations caused controversy in 2015. As a result, Weyers removed all links from his website to the development studio and the video game.[6]
In April 2020, the cyberpunk game Cloudpunk was released by the German developer ION LANDS. The game was written in English and translated into German by Weyers. In the same year, it was nominated for the Deutscher Computerspielpreis in both the main category Best German Game and the subcategories Best Game World and Aesthetics, of which it won the latter. The jury praised the story as well as the "deep storyline."[7]
In April 2021, it was announced that Weyers would handle the German localization for Return to Monkey Island for Lucasfilm Games, Devolver Digital, and Ron Gilbert's company Terrible Toybox.[8]
Furthermore, Weyers also translated novels, for example for the Dead Soft publishing house The Lions of Berk: Johnnie by C. Cardeno[9][10] and the Canim publishing house Kein Himmel ohne Sterne by Michelle Schrenk – as well as movie subtitles, among others for I Don't Want to Go Back Alone.

Game development[edit]
Weyers developed his own visual novels, including the Sleepless Night series, which is based on characters from his Shadow Trilogy, but is considered a story in its own right. The two already released games Sleepless Night and Sleepless Night 2: Ladies’ Night(mare) have been released for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. The first installment has been downloaded more than 100,000 times and received over 6,000 mostly positive reviews.[11] A spin-off titled Midnight Chaos was released in 2014 as Donationware.
His LGBT series on socio-critical themes currently consists of two games; This Is Where I Want To Die from 2013 and To Kill A Black Swan from 2014. The visual novel This Is Where I Want To Die is part of the exhibition "RAINBOW ARCADE" by the Schwules Museum in Berlin[12] as well as the accompanying catalogue "RAINBOW ARCADE CATALOG: Queer Gaming History 1985-2018".[13] In October 2018, the game was displayed at the Melbourne Queer Games Festival.[14] The title To Kill A Black Swan was inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and was presented by German newspaper Die Welt in the category "Games-Knüller" (translated: "Big hit games") in 2015.[15]
The visual novel Raven Curse was published in August 2018 in English and German and serves as a free prequel to the Raven Saga. In the game, the player takes control of the protagonist Corvus Raven and makes decisions at certain points to influence the plot.
