Margaret K Koerner (née Koster; born March 30, 1965) is an American art historian and curator.
Education and career[edit]
Born in Providence, RI, Margaret Koerner attended the Madeira School in Great Falls, VA, graduating in 1983. After receiving a B.A. in Art History from Middlebury College, she worked at Sotheby’s London and New York in the departments of Old Master Drawings and Books and Manuscripts. She received her M.A. (1993) from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and Ph.D. (2000) from Columbia University, dissertating on Hugo van der Goes.[1] [2] [3] [4]
Koerner has taught at Indiana University, Bloomington (1999-2000), the Courtauld Institute and Harvard University. She was an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow in the European Paintings Department at The Art Institute of Chicago. Koerner has published widely in the field of Northern Renaissance Art, including a much-discussed 2003 article on Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Double Portrait.[5] [6][7]
In 2018 Koerner curated a major exhibition of the South African Artist, William Kentridge: Smoke Ashes Fable at Sint-Janshospitaal Bruges, one of Europe’s oldest hospital complexes.[8]
Personal life[edit]
In 2003, Koerner married Joseph Koerner, an art historian and Harvard Professor. She has two children and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[9]
