Maria Spanou (Greek: Μαρία Σπανού; Chroupista, born in the 1790s) also known as Spanomaria (Greek: Σπανομαρία) was a chieftain of the Greek War of Independence from Chroupista, Kastoria.[1]

Biography[edit]

Maria Spanou was born in the late 18th century in Chroupista, Kastoria and was descended from an old family of tailors. During the Greek Revolution, the town revolted and her older brother, Evangelos, became the leader of the revolutionary forces. When he was killed, Stergios took over in his stead, until he was himself also killed in the clashes with the Ottomans, after which Maria took over the command. She fought the Ottomans in the areas of Orestida and Kastoria, but the revolution was doomed to fail in the area, firstly because of the lack of external aid and secondly due to the Kastoria's contemporary prosperity, which its residents didn't want to put it at risk by bringing the revolution in the city. After the failure, Spanomaria, as she had become known by then, left with the entirety of the Spanos family (which therefore adopted the surname Spanomaria) to Nigrita, where it survived.[1]
