Mariah Darling was born in Saint John in 1993 or 1994[2] and grew up in the west side of the city.[3] Their father, Don Darling, served as the mayor of Saint John from 2016 to 2021;[4] their mother, Patti, is a counsellor.[5] Darling attended Saint John High School where they undertook the International Baccalaureate programme.[6] They graduated from the University of New Brunswick's Saint John campus in 2018, after which they began medical research. In 2022, Darling became the education coordinator for Chroma NB, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group,[2][5] and was involved in advocating for the retention of the original version of Policy 713 relating to recognition of sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools.[5][7] They were elected president of Saint John Pride in January 2023.[8][9][10]
Darling first ran for Ward 3 of the Saint John Common Council in the 2021 municipal elections, placing third behind David Hickey and Gerry Lowe, who were both elected. They ran for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 2024 provincial election, as the Green Party candidate in the riding of Saint John Harbour, where they placed third; Hickey was elected with the Liberals, which saw his Ward 3 seat in the Saint John Common Council become vacant. In December 2024, municipal byelections were held throughout the province, with Hickey's former Ward 3 seat being one of the contested positions. Darling ran for Ward 3 against 10 other candidates and was elected with 375 votes.[2]
