Mariam Gomaa

Mariam Gomaa is an American physician and author. Her first poetry chapbook, Between the Shadow & the Soul, was published by Backbone Press in 2018 [1]. Her writing has appeared in Time [2], NBC News [3], Doximity [4], Nimrod International Journal, Graze Literary Magazine, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice 4e [5], and more. Forthcoming publications include poetry in RHINO Poetry and several anthologies. Her work is an exploration of womanhood, intersectional identity, and Arab-American life.

Education[edit]

Gomaa is currently a resident physician in obstetrics and gynecology at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC [6] [7]. She received her M.D. from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and her undergraduate degree in biological sciences (biochemistry) and creative writing (fiction) from Northwestern University.

Writing Career[edit]

Mariam Gomaa received her B.A. in creative writing with a concentration in fiction from Northwestern University in 2014. As an undergraduate at Northwestern, Gomaa's nonfiction, fiction, and poetry were published in The Daily Northwestern, Helicon Literary Magazine, Prompt Magazine, Graze Literary Magazine, and Al Bayan Magazine; and her photography published in The New York Times [8] andThe Daily Northwestern [9]. Gomaa served as a journalist at The Daily Northwestern for four years, and subsequently became photography editor, as well as founder and editor of The Spectrum [10], a weekly column in the opinion section highlighting the stories of marginalized students on campus. Gomaa also served as editor-in-chief of Al Bayan Magazine [11], and author and editor of Marooned on the Subway [12], a blog interviewing Chicagoans riding the 'L' train, for which she received several media grants [13].

While in medical school at Wake Forest University, Gomaa continued her writing as a freelance author. She published nonfiction essays in Time, NBC News, Doximity, and Readings for Diversity and Social Justice 4e, as well as poetry in Nimrod International Journal. Gomaa's first poetry chapbook, Between the Shadow & the Soul, was published by Backbone Press in 2018.

Gomaa has been invited to read poetry at Bookmarks[14], The Book Stall[15], Muslim Writer's Collective DC and more.

Forthcoming publications include poems in RHINO Poetry and several anthologies.

Awards[edit]

During her time at Northwestern University, Gomaa was a recipient of the English Department prize for non-fiction writing, a recipient of a first place prize from the Illinois College Press Association for in-depth reporting, and second place recipient at the Northwestern University Arts & Research Exposition.

In 2016 Gomaa received the Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Award for her poem, Ectopic [16]. She was also a finalist for the Irvin David Yalom, MD Literary Award.
