]] Marie Y. Lemelle (born July 22) is an American film producer, publicist and journalist.

Life and Career[edit]

Marie Y. Lemelle is a film producer, casting director, publicist and journalist. Lemelle also has written two short film screenplays, "Love Code" and "Cornrows, Confusion and Hope."

Born in Los Angeles, California, Marie Lemelle earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of La Verne and a professional certificate in journalism at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Early in her professional career, Lemelle’s activism for human rights was evidenced with her leadership as the president of the Water and Power African American Association, an affinity group of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the largest municipal utility in North America.   As a two-term president presiding over more than 300 members, Lemelle was the first president to produce a televised Black History Month Celebration at the LADWP. The two-hour program was on rotation on LA Channel 35.  During her term, Lemelle organized bus trips to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park as part of an annual tradition to celebrate Juneteenth.  Allensworth, which was the  "American Dream” for African Americans in 1908, celebrated its 100th year anniversary in 2008. The park is located in California, north of Bakersfield; 20 miles north of Wasco on Highway 43; seven miles west of Earlimart on County Road J22.

In 2008, Lemelle became the second black woman to be appointed by the City of Glendale, California to the Commission on the Status of Women[1] serving with former Mayor Paula Devine. Until as late as the 1960s, Glendale was a sundown town. Nonwhites were required to leave city limits by a certain time each day or risk arrest and possible violence.[2]

Lemelle's film career was launched through her position as unit publicist, producer, and project manager for Foremost Entertainment Media Group, an independent motion picture company based in Los Angeles, California and Detroit, Michigan.

In 2000, she founded Platinum Star Public Relations, a boutique agency in Glendale, California, that provided film PR, casting, and other production services for diverse film projects.[3]

She worked as an associate producer and casting associate on the Jean-Claude La Marre film, Chocolate City[4], the first installment of a three picture franchise. The film stars Robert Ri'chard, Tyson Beckford, Michael Jai White.  Lemelle was the unit publicist and associate producer on the Hey Mr. Postman![5] starring Omar Gooding, Paula Jai Parker, and Giselle Mendoza.

In 2016, Lemelle joined the Red Cardinals Film Production Team as a producer, casting director and unit publicist to produce a feature film, Betrothed, starring Bill Oberst, Jr., known for his work in horror films.

Lemelle secured a small budget to produce a short film titled Love Code.

In 2019, Lemelle produced and cast the feature film Flint Tale[6] for theatrical release starring Hawthorne James, Erica Peeples, and introducing Tecoya Harris. The former Mayor of Flint, Karen Weaver, made a cameo appearance.[7] The film was shot on location in Flint, Michigan. The drama, based on the Flint Water Crisis, was named in Variety Magazine as one of the films eligible for Academy Awards consideration.[8]
