Mario Kart: Source was a planned total conversion mod in development using Valve's Source game engine.[2] It was first announced in 2006 with development suspending in November 2012.[citation needed] It is based on the popular Mario Kart series.[3][4][5][6]

In September 2006, a video with first look at a beta test of the game was uploaded on YouTube.[7]

Gameplay[edit]

Just like the traditional Mario Kart series, game modes like Single Mode and Battle Mode were to be included. There would have been up to 30 different playable characters[8] and 12 different courses.

The main mode in the game is where the player races in a series of grand prix competitions (referred to as Cups), against computer-controlled competitors. Each Cup consists of four three-lap races. Each Cup has three difficulty levels, which determine the speed of the karts: 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc.

Like traditional Mario Kart games, players can use items to hinder other players' progress. In Battle mode, players are placed in specially designed battle arenas, strewn with power-ups. Each player has three balloons attached to their kart. Each time they take a hit from an offensive item or an opponent's ramming, they lose a balloon. The last player standing wins.
