Markus Schäfer (born 11 May 1965) is a German manager and member of the board of directors of the Mercedes-Benz Group. As chief technology officer, he is responsible for the development and purchasing departments.[1]

Career[edit]

Markus Schäfer grew up in Niederlaasphe and graduated from the municipal high school in Bad Laasphe. In 1990 he graduated from the Technical University of Darmstadt with a degree in mechanical engineering and started his career at what was then Daimler-Benz AG. Among other things, he was plant manager of an assembly plant in Cairo, Egypt, and CEO for Mercedes-Benz U.S. International at Tuscaloosa (USA).[2] In 2014 he became Head of Production and Purchasing at Daimler AG. He has been a member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG since 2019 and is responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development on the Board of Management. Since June 1, 2019, he has also been responsible for global purchasing at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

In July 2019 he was appointed chairman of the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd., which controls the Mercedes AMG F1 Team in Formula One. He succeeds Niki Lauda.[3]
