Marooned Awakening is a 2022 British psychological thriller film directed by Musaab Mustafa, co-written by Cameron Ashplant and Mustafa, and starring Ashplant, Murray McArthur, Tilly Keeper and Tim McInnerny.[1] The film was shot entirely on the island of Guernsey.[2]

Plot

Alex (Cameron Ashplant), a young aspiring journalist, is eager to leave his island home for a better life in the city. The film follows Alex on a journey as he attempts to understand what happened in a serious boat accident, which resulted in a hospitalization. Whilst investigating this story, Alex is forced to revisit some distorted memories of his loving girlfriend, Emily (Tilly Keeper), and his father (Murray McArthur), a grieving angler.[3]

Production

Ashplant and Mustafa began collaborating on script development while both were studying at Durham University. The plot draws on Ashplant’s experience of growing up and living on an island.[4] Having co-founded a film production company, Across the Channel Productions Ltd, through which the pair had already produced a travel documentary series released on Amazon Prime as well as an award-winning short film, they began pre-production on the feature in late 2020.[5] The working title was 'Vie'.[6] In early 2021, the script was picked up by film production and financing firm, Ivy Gate Films.[7][8] The film was also supported by Guernsey Arts.[9]

Tilly Keeper joined the project in the summer of 2021, prior to being cast in the fourth series of Netflix series, You.[10] Principal photography took place in September 2021 on Guernsey. In January 2022 the critic Stuart Bannerman announced the addition to the cast of Tim McInnerny, lending his voice to the character Karl, a press editor who offers the protagonist a new life as a journalist on the mainland.[11]

Release

The release of the trailer was announced by Variety in August 2022.[12] Later that month, the British Board of Film Classification gave the film a 12A age rating.[13]

Marooned Awakening premiered at Beau Séjour Theatre in Guernsey on September 3, 2022[14] to an audience of more than 400, including the island's Lt-Governor Lt General Richard Cripwell and Guernsey Bailiff Richard McMahon.[15]

In December 2022 it was announced that the film will have a limited theatrical release in the United Kingdom, showing at select cinemas from February 2, 2023.[16]

The film will be available for streaming in the United States and Canada from February 21, 2023.[17] The Film will be streamed on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Vudu.
