Martin Spano, born Martin Špaňo (* May 16th 1985, Želiezovce), is a Slovak computer scientist, writer and popularizer of computer science, programming and artificial intelligence. He lectures at technology conferences and is actively involved in the public debate on artificial intelligence.[1] He currently lives and works in Austria.[2]

Childhood and education[edit]

Martin Spano was born on May 16th, 1985 in Želiezovce as the only child in the family of tax accountant and doctor. He spent his entire childhood in the village of Čaka in southern Slovakia, where he also attended primary school. It is here where he discovers the concept of artificial intelligence in a book 2001: Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clark.[3] Shortly thereafter, he begins programming.[4] Later he studied at the Bilingual English-Slovak Grammar School in Sučany. From 2004 to 2009 he studied Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University.

Work and projects[edit]

After graduation he goes to Vienna[5], where he works as a software developer with smart technologies.[6] In 2017, it publishes an advanced Facebook search tool[7], which extends the standard search capability by searching based on criteria such as residence, employer and others.[8] At the time of publication, it should have been the only tool allowing such a search.[9] Subsequently, this tool was released in the form of Android application SearchApp.[10] In 2018, he published KeywordsApp[11], an online database of 300 million top Google searches[12], that expands Google Trends.[13] At present, none of the tools is available anymore because Spano has discontinued their support and is purely publishing.[14]

Publication of The Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell[edit]

In 2019 Spano published The Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell. [15] The book contains an introduction to the field of artificial intelligence for non-technical audiences.[16] The book has become a bestseller on Amazon[17] in the sections of artificial intelligence and cybernetics.[18] The book was translated into Slovak language.[19] The book is written in the form of stories for easier understanding of artificial intelligence topics.[20] The reason for its writing was, according to Span, the rebuttal of myths and rumors that began to be created in the field of artificial intelligence.[21] Spano sees artificial intelligence and advanced technology not a threat[22], but a means of increasing productivity[23] and helping to address global challenges such as climate change, raising living standards in poor countries, or treating cancer.[24] He assumes that automation will put an end to hard, inhumane work and that people will be able to engage in activities that they enjoy and do.[25] Following the success of the book, Spano decided to pursue educational activities in artificial intelligence programming[26] and computer science[27]. He is currently preparing another book.[28]

Slovak national AI strategy[edit]

In connection with awareness-raising activities in the field of artificial intelligence in Slovakia, Spano has prepared an initiative called Slovakia.ai[29], in which he presented his proposal for an artificial intelligence strategy in Slovakia. [30] His goal is to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence.[31] This initiative was incorporated into a new Slovak-AI initiative after his invitation to the newly emerging Slovak Center for Artificial Intelligence Research Slovak-AI.[32]
