Martina Castro is an American journalist who co-founded and produced Radio Ambulante, the first Spanigh-language audio program distributed by NPR.[1] She is the CEO and founder of Adonde Media, a global podcast production company and host of the Duolingo Spanish Podcast, which was launched in 2018.[2]

At the age of 19, Castro wrote the first blog entry for NPR's Next Generation Radio program, which trains journalists to enter public media and audio journalism careers. The summer after Castro graduated college she started an internship at NPR where she would go on to work for just over four years.[3]

Career

Since 2004, Castro has worked as a public radio producer, reporter, managing editor, sound designer, live event creative director and audio exhibit curator. After her time at NPR, Martina worked at KALW, an NPR member station in San Francisco, California. During her six years at KALW, she helped grow the newsroom, including reporting and editing for KALW's daily news magazine, Crosscurrents.[1][4] In 2011, Castro co-founder[1] and sound designer[5] for Radio Ambulante which is now distributed by NPR. Castro has called Radio Ambulante "This American Life but in Spanish" in an interview on the podcast Latina to Latina.[1]Castro also worked independently on several other projects that aired nationally on All Things Considered and Morning Edition. In 2015, Castro received a Fulbright grant to teach the art of storytelling at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay. She then moved to Chile and applied to the incubator program StartUp Chile. In that program, she started Adonde Media, a global production company focused on expanding the supply of podcasts in Spanish.[3] Castro's listener survey of fans who listen to podcasts in Spanish indicated that 53% listen to podcasts in English.[6]

Since its founding in 2017, Adonde Media has worked with global clients such as Duolingo,[7] TED, and more to produce a variety of podcasts in different languages. In a 2017 story on NBC News, Castro talked about how she developed a theme of travel stories to incorporate into the Duolingo podcasts.[8] In 2021, Adonde Media and Hrishikesh Hirway announced their partnership to produce a spinoff of Song Exploder for Spanish-speaking audiences.[9][10] Adonde Media is also beginning to invest in original content and will produce and distribute the fifth season of the Spanish-language podcast, La Raras, with Castro as the executive producer.[11]

Awards and honors

Castro's work has been recognized with several awards including the 2014 National Edward R. Murrow award for Best Radio Documentary as producer and co-writer of "911: The Race to an Emergency".[12]
