Mary Eva Duthie (June 26, 1892 — August 19, 1972) was a rural sociologist, extension and theatre scholar, and community developer. Duthie was one of the first women to have a leadership role in the Rural Sociological Society,[1] and was a central organizer of the New York State Community Theatre association which would later become Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS),[2] the organization now presents the Mary Eva Duthie Award for Outstanding Contributions to Theatre in New York State. Her research focused on the collection, distribution, and development of arts and drama in rural communities.

Background and education[edit]

Duthie was born on June 26th, 1892 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.[2] Duthie received a teaching certificate from Western Michigan University in 1913,[3] after which she worked as a teacher in various states and held various positions in the YWCA.[2] Duthie would later earn her bachelor’s at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1924, and eventually her PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1937. Duthie’s doctoral dissertation focused on 4-H Club work, and her seminal work, Program of songs, games and folk dances for 4-H clubs,[4] nationally by 4-H. Duthie died August 19, 1972 in Ithaca, New York.

Career[edit]

Duthie joined the New York State College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Cornell University as an extension instructor in 1924.[2] Duthie's work focused on rural communities and the role of arts in the development of rural life. Duthie was one of the organizers and executive secretaries of the New York State Community Theatre Association.[5][6] Duthie also organized a loan library of more than a thousand plays and made a quarterly publication about community organized theatre. This allowed the number of community theatres to more than quadruple in size between 1946 and 1955. Duthie’s legacy of community and theatre development is seen in the TANYS award for Outstanding Contributions to Theatre in New York State which bears her name.[7]

She retired from Cornell University in 1955.[8][9]
