Masaharu Seno, Ph.D. (born 1956) is a Japanese molecular biologist and a cancer research scientist known for work on the Cripto-1 gene with David S. Salomon, a co-discoverer of Cripto-1.[1] [2]. He is the son of a famous Japanese scientist Satimaru Seno, MD (1915-2007) [3]. His areas of research currently include cancer stem cells, microenvironment and small molecule inhibitors [4]
Life
Masaharu was born in Okayama, Japan in 1956. Son of Satimaru and Fusako Seno. He studied at Osaka University and worked afterward as a scientist at Takeda Chemical Industries. In 1989, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Osaka University, Japan. From 2001, he worked as an associate professor in Protein Engineering at Okayama University. He was awarded a professorship at Okayama University in 2007. He received the Okayama Foundation Science and Technical Award in 1995, and the Kudodh Foundation Cancer Research Award in 1993.[5]
Research
Masaharu Seno was in the first team to succeed in sequencing rat basic fibroblast growth factor and subsequently succeeded in producing recombinant bFGF at Takeda Company [6].[7] He has also been known for his work in the cancer stem cell area, as he created the world’s first cancer stem cell model from iPS cells.[8]
