Mass–energy–information equivalence

The proposed mass-energy-information-equivalence principle is the hypothesis that mass, energy and information are all facets of a single underlying phenomenon. This principle proposed by professor M. M. Vopson in 2019.[1] It extends the mass-energy equivalence principle of special relativity by asserting that information has mass.[2] Vopson's ideas have been described as an application of Landauer's principle to elementary particles.[3]

Testability[edit]

Vopson has described a particle physics-based experimental tests for this hypothesis.[4]

E Džaferović-Mašić has suggested, based on Vopson's principle, that missing information in the Universe may be a candidate for explaining the dark matter phenomenon, and has proposed experiments that may be capable of testing this hypothesis.[5]

Challenges[edit]

In a preprint published in 2022, Mark Burgin and Rao Mikkilineni argue, based on Burgin's own General Theory of Information, that Landauer's principle, Vopson's principle etc. describe only properties of the physical representations of information, but not the information itself.[6]
