Biography[edit]

Massimo La Rosa lives in Belmonte Mezzagno, a mountain village a few kilometers from the capital of Sicily. He graduated from the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory of Palermo in 1994, after studying with Maestro Filippo Bonanno. He is an appreciated concerto soloist and performer trombonist.[1], among the most popular in the national and international classical music community. From a very young age, Massimo La Rosa has been the principal trombone of several famous theater orchestras such as La Scala Opera House in Milan and the Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia Theater in Rome.

Career[edit]

In 1996, 2 years after his diploma, has been principal trombone of La Fenice Opera House Orchestra in Venice. He has performed in the Orchestra for 12 years, in executions and performances also as a soloist. In the following 12 years he performed as principal trombone in various orchestras in Italy and around the world and performed several solo concerts, including Trombone Concerto of Nino Rota and orchestra with guest conductor Gianandrea Noseda, and the Ferdinand David’s concertino for trombone and orchestra, under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The performance was defined by critics as a truly compelling musical event. One might have mistaken his sound for a human voice.

He also performed as guest principal Trombone of the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra in Japan conducted by Maestro Seiji Osawa, participating in many Asian concerts and tours. Massimo La Rosa has performed as solo trombone on the recent Grammy Award], winning recording of Maurice Ravel’s L’Enfant Et Les Sortilèges with Seiji Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra. He also has performed in recitals in Asia, South America, Europe and the United States. Among the numerous musical performances of his career, Launy Grondahl's Concerto for trombone, the first Italian performance, offered Massimo La Rosa the opportunity of a good solo rehearsal when he performed as principal trombone of the Orchestra of the La Fenice. On that occasion, he was particularly appreciated for his safe intonation and great dynamic richness during the performance. He has been principal trombone in the prestigious Cleveland Orchestra[2] considered one of the Big Five Orchestras of the United States. Currently, he performs as the principal trombone in Italy, at the OSS, the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro Politeama Palermo.

Massimo La Rosa's Master Classes and Recitals around the world[edit]

His master classes and recitals take place in many European countries, in North and South America and in Asia. In fact, Massimo La Rosa is highly regarded as a trombonist with skills in spreading the techniques of playing the trombone, which he teaches through exercises and lessons much appreciated by his students. This activity is also related to his performances in various orchestras of international level, in which he performed as principal trombone. During his tenure at the Cleveland Orchestra he was involved in a scandal not yet legally clarified, which has many ambiguous aspects. Basically, Massimo La Rosa was suspended from the concert activity, following a report by an "independent special committee" that investigated some anonymous allegations of "sexual misconduct" and "related problems" throughout the ensemble. Accusations that have not yet found any circumstantial juridical element that would allow the musician to be subjected to any investigations or judicial processes.

Albums and musical productions[edit]

Massimo La Rosa is the author of two solo album: Cantando and Sempre Espressivo. Following the release of his first solo recording, Cantando, he was named “New Artist of the Month” by Musical America magazine. In this regard, critics wrote: “La Rosa has distinguished himself as a musician of impeccable taste and remarkable facility.” American Record Guide wrote that his performances on the album were “the best available”[3]

MLR musical instrument[edit]

Massimo La Rosa plays a custom trombone, conceived and made with the help of a craftsman who often collaborates with him in the creation of new pieces to be adapted to his instrument: the Vincent Bach A47MLR Artisan La Rosa trombone with valve. In addition, he has conceived and designed a special MLR voiceline 5L model mouthpiece, which allows him to express his skills as a solo trombonist musician, in performances of rare refinement.
