Master Esteban (Spanish: Maestro Esteban) was an 11th-century Spanish master builder and architect associated with the early construction of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.[1] He directed the initial phase of construction of the Romanesque cathedral, which began in 1075 during the episcopate of Bishop Diego Peláez.[2]

Little is known about Master Esteban's life or career. Contemporary documentation relating to him is limited, and most information about his work is derived from historical studies of the cathedral's construction.[3] He is generally regarded as the first master builder of the present cathedral, preceding Master Mateo, who later oversaw much of its completion and designed the Pórtico da Gloria.[4]

Career

Construction of the present Santiago de Compostela Cathedral commenced in 1075 to replace earlier churches on the site traditionally associated with the tomb of Saint James the Great. Master Esteban is credited with directing the earliest stage of the project, establishing the foundations and initial Romanesque structure that would later be continued by successive generations of master builders.[5]

Legacy

Master Esteban is regarded as one of the principal figures in the early history of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. His work established the foundations of one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Europe and one of Christianity's principal pilgrimage destinations.[6]
