The Master Painters Institute (MPI) was established in 1995 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, with the core team of 10 employees, based both in Vancouver and remotely.

Former Vice President of KTA Tator, Cynthia O'Malley, took on the role of Executive Director for MPI in 2018;[2]

MPI develops and tests against performance standards for commercially available paints and coatings.

MPI also provides education, coatings systems, guide specifications and industry related information via their website

MPI was formally acquired by NACE International, under the NACE International Institute in 2017[3]

Standards and performance testing[edit]

MPI develops technical performance coatings standards[4], which are referenced in the United Facilities Guide Specification - UFGS 09 90 00 [5], and executes paint testing in accordance with these standards, using ASTM compliant testing equipment and methods at an ISO17025 accredited laboratory.[6]

Coatings products that meet or exceed the performance standard(s) that they are tested against, are listed in the MPI Approved Products List (APL).

There are 80+ listing manufacturers (members), listing products in the APL [1]

Manufacturers with products listed in the MPI APL include:

Specification manuals[edit]

MPI Architectural and Maintenance Repainting specification manuals have been developed as a reference guide for specifying painting systems in new or repaint construction.[9]

The MPI Architectural Painting Specification Decision Tree method was developed as a result of a request from the U.S. Navy.[10]

Training and certification[edit]

MPI provides a training and examination program, that is available online and tailored to the architectural coatings industry.

The training program includes the Essentials of Paint and Painting Technology (ACT), Architectural Painting (ACS), Maintenance Repainting (MCS) and Inspection (INS)
