Mate is a 2021 Australian short film directed by George-Alex Nagle and written by George-Alex Nagle, Daniel Corboy and Ben Tarwin. It follows the story of a chaotic father's attempted reconnection with his impressionable teenage son over the course of a turbulent weekend on the outskirts of Sydney. It received favourable reviews[1] and became the first Australian film to win the Grand Prix at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival[2][3][4][5]
Synopsis[edit]
After a long time apart, volatile local deadbeat John must take care of reserved schoolboy Jack over a weekend in an insular working-class outpost of western Sydney. However, Jack’s attempt to re-establish their relationship is threatened as John's self-destructive nature emerges.

Production[edit]
Mate was filmed in several suburbs throughout western Sydney, New South Wales including; Penrith, Werrington, Jordan Springs, Westmead and Pendle Hill.
Principal photography took place in July 2020, with additional photography in November 2020. Shooting was initially scheduled for February 2020, but was delayed due to the first state-wide lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in New South Wales.[3]
