Bio[edit]

From the "About Me" page on Skutnik's website:

"I'm an independent game developer and graphic novelist.

Telling stories – that's the thing I want to do in my life. Whether through comics or games – both mediums work fine for me. I've got lots of stories in my head, and I'll keep serving them to whoever wants to listen in whichever form."

Upcoming

  • Daymare Town 5
Mateusz Skutnik said on Patreon, "So at the end we left the infamous town, right? Right? Even if so, wouldn't you like to see what's beyond its walls? What's beyond the fog/mist? What kind of world spawned such town in the first place? Are the citizens of Daymare indigenous, or just creatures that stumbled upon deserted city structures? Am I saying too much already?"
On January 13, 2017, Skutnik said on the Pastel Land Forum that he was "kind of done with going back to old series, at least for now."[7] If Skutnik decides to make it, Daymare Town 5's development will most likely start after 2017.

10 Gnomes[edit]

10 Gnomes is a game series created by Skutnik. Each game consists of a series of black-and-white photographs of various settings, and the player can zoom in on the pictures in certain places to search for ten gnomes that Skutnik has drawn into the photos.

  • 10 Gnomes 2: Walk in the Park (February 2008)
  • 10 Gnomes 3: Early Spring Garden (March 2008)

  • 10 Gnomes in Montaigut-le-Blanc (July 2015)
This was the first offline installment in the series, released as a download. Skutnik's reason for this was that once he removed ads from his website when his revenue from Patreon became higher than what he had previously received from advertising, he no longer had a need to put new games on his website.
  • 10 Gnomes in Pothia (September 2016)
This was Skutnik's second game produced in GameMaker (the first being Mission to the Sun), and his first point-and-click GameMaker game.
  • 10 Gnomes in Trstenik (July 2017)

Covert Front[edit]

Covert Front is a game series written by Karol Konwerski and drawn by Mateusz Skutnik. It consists of four games in which the player plays as a secret agent named Kara, investigating the disappearance of a Bavarian scientist named Karl von Toten in 1904. The series takes place in an alternate universe where WW1 took place 10 years earlier, due to an earlier industrial/scientific revolution.

  • Covert Front 1: All Quiet on the Covert Front (July 2007)
Kara breaks into Karl von Toten's mansion, and discovers that it is empty. She finds a secret lab underneath the house, and then a hidden base underneath that.
  • Covert Front 2: Station on the Horizon (October 2007)
Kara investigates the hidden base. She finds that it was made to spy on von Toten, though she doesn't know which organization made it, or who was spying on him. She leaves, and is told by another agent to go to Zurich, Switzerland.
  • Covert Front 3: Night in Zurich (July 2009)
Kara goes to Zurich, Switzerland. She goes around the town looking for clues about what happened to Karl von Toten. She is kidnapped by Manfred Nikolai, von Toten's butler, who she realizes had built the hidden base to spy on Toten for the German government. Kara finds out that von Toten made an important scientific breakthrough, and Manfred wanted to take the experiment for himself. Kara escapes, finds an airplane, and flies to Lisbon, Portugal, where Manfred said that von Toten was located.
  • Covert Front 4: Spark of Life (April 2012)
Kara goes to Lisbon, Portugal. She manages to find von Toten, but Manfred comes in to kill both of them. In self-defense, Kara kills Manfred. Von Toten then turns on a projector pointed at a blank wall, and a door appears. Kara and von Toten go through the door, and Kara destroys the projector. The door disappears.

Upcoming

  • Covert Front 5 (TBA)
Skutnik and Konwerski repeatedly told fans that Covert Front 4 was the end of the series, but in July 2015, when Mateusz reached $1000 a month on Patreon, they decided to make Covert Front 5. In his 2016 wrap-up[9] on January 10, 2017, Skutnik said that he would not start development in 2017, stating that "the future of this game remains shaky." He later said on January 13 in the Pastel Land Forum that he was "kind of done with going back to old series, at least for now."[10]

Where is the New Year?[edit]

Where is the New Year is a series of games created by Skutnik. They are all very different, but are all connected by the main goal: to find the personified new year.

  • Where is 2009? (December 2008)
The first game in the series is a simple platformer where the player is Santa Claus. The game starts like an escape-the-room game, but rapidly becomes surreal when Santa falls down a hole that leads to China. He finds 2009 in the form of a baby being kept in a secluded Buddhist monastery.
  • Where is 2010? (December 2009)
This is a simple platformer that takes place in the Daymare Town universe. The player is a tiny black creature who is trying to find 2010.
  • Where is 2011? (December 2010)
This game is made in the style of 10 Gnomes. It consists of black-and-white photographs of Gdansk, Poland that the player can zoom in on to look for clues. The player finds that 2011 is in the form of a gnome.
  • Where is 2012? (December 2011)
This is similar to Where is 2009?, in that the game is a platformer and the player is Santa Claus. The main differences is that this one is much bigger than 2009, and the backgrounds are in watercolor. Santa must go around the North Pole solving puzzles, searching for the infant personification of 2012.
  • Where is 2013? (December 2012)
This is a point-and-click game in the style of 10 Gnomes, except that the photographs are in color. The player must find 2013, which is in the form of a grey alien.
  • Where is 2014? (December 2013)
This is the shortest game in the series so far. It is a point-and-click game in the vein of Submachine or Covert Front, but with a unique artistic style. The entire game takes place on one screen, which contains many devices and puzzles. The goal of the game is to set off an alarm clock to wake up 2014, which is in the form of a young child.
  • Where is 2015? (December 2014)
This is the largest game in the series so far. The gameplay is the same as in Where is 2013? The player finds 2015, which is in the form of a young child. This game's download size was so large that some websites that host Mateusz's games couldn't host it.
  • Where is 2016? (December 2015)
The gameplay of this game is similar to Where is 2015?, but it is much smaller than that one. The reason for this was that Skutnik had been working for most of 2015 on Submachine 10: The Exit, which is one of the largest games he has ever made. He managed to complete that game on December 21, which left him only 10 days to make Where is 2016?.
  • Where is 2017? (December 2016)
Where is 2017? is the first offline installment in the series, as a download rather than online. The game, made using the GameMaker: Studio engine, is also a notable part in the series for being the first installment not produced in Adobe Flash. The game saw the return of Santa Claus as the player character.
  • Where is 2018? (December 2017)
Where is 2018? , also offline, made using the GameMaker: Studio engine. In this game, the Santa Claus must resolve puzzles.
  • Where is 2019? (December 2018)
Where is 2019? , also offline.

Social media[edit]

Skutnik said in a tweet on September 19, 2015 that he would put a game on Steam in 2016. He said on October 12 that he wouldn't want to put a "ten-year old flash game" on Steam, and that he wanted to start with something new. He said on November 6, 2015 that it was a possibility that he would put Submachine on Steam in the distant future.

After he released Submachine 10, he revealed his tentative plans for 2016.[11] He said in a Facebook comment on January 5, 2016 that if he released a game on Steam, it would be in 2017.

On January 10, 2017, Skutnik revealed his plans for 2017 on his website. He said that he would probably start working on the Steam game in 2017, calling it "The Big Game." He said that it would probably take one to two years to complete, so the game may be released in 2018 or 2019.[12]

PastelGames (games not created by Mateusz Skutnik)[edit]

For a brief period of time at the beginning of 2016, Skutnik deleted the website of PastelGames, redirecting the URL pastelgames.com to his website's game page (mateuszskutnik.com/games). His reason for this was because no games will ever be made there again, since no one works at PastelGames anymore. However, after much protest and outcry from fans, he brought the website back. He has since turned it back to a redirect to his website's game page. It is unknown if the PastelGames website still exists.
