Matthew "Matt" Brolley (born November 1st, 1981) is an Illinois politician of the Democratic Party, who took office as the 43rd Village President of Montgomery in 2013.[1] Brolley began his political career by serving as a Montgomery village trustee for two years between 2011 and 2013. In 2017, Brolley was uncontested and re-elected to a second term as village president.

Brolley is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress in Illinois's 14th congressional district with support from Congressman Bill Foster, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, and the Chicago Sun-Times.[2][3][4][5][6]

Early life[edit]

Matt Brolley was born in Chicago, Illinois, but his family moved to the Boulder Hill subdivision near Aurora, Illinois when he was three years-old.[7] In 2000, he graduated from Oswego High School. Brolley is a civil engineer with degrees from North Central College and the University of Illinois at Chicago. In college, Brolley interned at Argonne National Laboratory.

In his professional career, he has been recognized as a leader. He was invited by Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government to participate in a program for state and local government executives. In 2017, he was recognized by the Illinois chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers as the "Citizen Engineer of the Year" for his work with Engineers Without Borders where he worked for a week in Armenta, Honduras to construct a safe public water system for the community.[7]

Political career[edit]

Brolley first ran for elected office in 2011 when he was elected as a Montgomery Village Trustee.[8] Two years later he was inspired to run for village president after seeing "too much extremism and not enough common sense."[7] He was elected to his first term as village president in April 2013 with 53 percent of the vote.[1] In his first term, Brolley championed a referendum to change Montgomery's funding mechanism for local infrastructure. The referendum won support from more than 60 percent of voters in 2014.[9]

In 2017, Brolley ran for re-election unopposed and won a second term as village president. Later that year, after President Donald Trump announced the United States would leave the Paris Climate Agreement, Brolley announced that Montgomery would join many other cities and continue to live up to the agreement's climate goals.[10] In December 2017, he was invited by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to be one of 50 mayors from around the world to sign the Chicago Climate Charter.[11]

Congressional campaign[edit]

In an interview with The Aurora Beacon-News in June 2017, Brolley confirmed he was seeking the Democratic nomintion for Congress in Illinois's 14th congressional district.[2] He hopes to challenge incumbent Republican Congressman Randy Hultgren in the 2018 general election.

In the race, Brolley has welcomed the support of many local leaders and organizations including Congressman Bill Foster, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, and the Chicago Sun-Times.[2][3][4][5][6]
