Matthew Duss (born 1972) is an American political activist, blogger, and foreign policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders. Duss served as an advisor to the Bernie Sanders 2020 presidential campaign.

Background and education[edit]

Duss was born in Nyack, New York.[1] His mother was a nurse and his father, a journalist, was born in a Ukrainian kulak family and immigrated to the United States at age 2.[1] Duss grew up in the evangelical church where there was "a very strong emphasis in my home on modeling Christ to the world through kindness and care for others."[2] Duss earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and Master of Arts in Middle East studies from the University of Washington.[3]

Career[edit]

After graduating from college, Duss started writing for The American Prospect in 2007. Then he moved to the Center for American Progress in 2008, where he blogged on ThinkProgress until 2014.[1][4] [5] Duss left CAP to become president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.[1][4] After the 2016 election, Duss joined the staff of Senator Bernie Sanders.[2] Duss is credited with being "the principal reason that (Senator) Sanders" introduced the resolution to end U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia's war on Yemen.[4]

Duss advocates for a progressive foreign policy.[2]

Duss has said that the United States must “recognize that Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territories and its daily restrictions on the most basic political and civil liberties of the Palestinian people run contrary to fundamental American values.”[6]
